Ayashimon: Maruo Finds a New Playground – and Ignores All Warnings

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Ayashimon Chapter 3, "I Only Ever Take the Juiciest Bits" by Yuji Kaku, Adrienne Beck, Brandon Bovia, available in English via Viz Media.

Now that they've made it into Shinjuku, Ayashimon Chapter 3 sees Urara and Maruo making their way to Kabukicho, a dangerous area where law enforcement looks the other way and Ayashimon gangs reign supreme. Living up to her title as "Elder Sister," Urara lists out the rules for surviving the city, warning Maruo much like one warn a child about Stranger Danger. Maruo indignantly brushes Urra off, saying he knows exactly how dangerous the area is thanks to what he's seen on TV. He insists that "only country bumpkins and little kids get scared of Kabukicho." He then proceeds to become overwhelmed by Kabukicho.

As Urara leads him deeper into the underworld of yakuza-run businesses, Maruo witnesses just how deadly this part of town can be. One man is bitten in half by an Ayashimon while another finishes his business at a massage parlor. Urara explains that most of the sex work is controlled by the Ayashimon yakuza, and the woman that saw the man off transforms from a beauty into a tanuki, or raccoon-dog. The weak humans are drawn in by the bright lights and bustling nightlife Kabukicho offers while the Ayashimon run everything behind the scenes.

Urara explains Kabukicho Ayashimon to Maruo

At a cafe, they witness two men having an argument. The larger of the two feels disrespected by the smaller one, the result of an unknown altercation. Urara suspects that the smaller man tried scamming the angry one and got caught. She says that, in order not to be attacked and avoid disrespect, she and Maruo need a base of operations. Urara then suggests taking over a weaker group and using their base. Maruo, however, is more interested in catching up on manga. He explains to her that he could never buy new volumes as a kid, so it's his first time reading the most current issue of Jump. He doesn't want to think; he just wants to fight. All the time in between is manga time.

The fight between the two Ayashimon escalates, with the angry man explaining that, since the shop they are in is Ayashimon-only, he can kill the smaller man and nothing will be done about it. Maruo asks if they should help him, but Urara advises against it. Thinking on it further, she suggests that, once he leaves, they'll take over the weaker guy's gang first and take his office.

Maruo uses his Special Attack against Nyudo

Despite Urara's warning, Maruo walks up to the fight and offers to help the weaker Ayashimon in exchange for his group's office. This enrages the other Ayashimon, who is Inokuma Nyudo, a fire yokai. Nyudo throws a punch at Maruo, who catches it, excited that he gets to fight again. Nyudo goes full Ayashimon with an attack called Yojutsu: Karakusa Blaze, but it only excites Maruo, who easily deflects the attack with a fire door. However, because it's made of steel, the door quickly heats up and burns his hands. Urara suggests using the door to redirect the fire towards the sprinklers on the ceiling, but Maruo takes a more direct approach and just punches them.

Now soaked with water, Nyudo can't use his fire powers like before. Urara warns Maruo that they have to set up an official ritual duel or else the fight will be pointless, but her underling doesn't listen and launches his own special attack. He punches Nyudo with his "Ultimate Final Conquering Destructo Heavenly True--," but tat's all he can get out before Nyudo explodes from the force of his punch, disappointing him that he couldn't finish saying the name.

The next chapter of Ayashimon will be available on Sunday, December 5th.
