The show's producers recently confirmed that, despite initially promoting The Final Season - Part 2 as the end of the series, that the show would be returning for Part 3 in 2023. Prior to Part 2's finale, many fans suspected that there would be more to the series than this season, as there still remains several chapters worth of content from Hajime Isayama's original manga to adapt. Studio MAPPA confirmed that Part 3 was in production with a short teaser trailer that was released following the premiere of the 12th episode from Part 2.

Isayama's Attack on Titan manga was first published in 2009. The manga is published by Kodansha, who picked up the series after Isayama's draft was infamously rejected by Shueisha, the publisher of the world's most popular manga magazine, Shonen Jump. Isayama has gotten the last laugh however, as his series has become one of the biggest entertainment franchises to come out of Japan in over a decade, with the manga now holding a worldwide circulation of over 100 million copies.

The anime adaptation was originally produced by Wit Studio, the animation house that is best known for producing a number of critically acclaimed hits, including Vinland Saga, Vivy: Fluorite Eyes' Song, and one of the biggest surprise to debut in 2021, Ranking of Kings. Production for the series was unexpectedly moved to MAPPA, the studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Yuri!! on Ice, for its final season. MAPPA's work on the first part of The Final Season was initially derided for not looking as good as Wit's seasons, but those issues have appeared to have either been addressed or simply ignored as most fans were absorbed in the hype for the series' finale.

Isayama's complete manga series is now available in English from publisher Kodansha USA. The anime series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation and Hulu.
