MAPPA released art from Episode 78 of Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 2.
The new art shows off two wildly different scenes from the series. The first piece comes from the latest episode's flashback to the series' training arc, and shows a lighthearted look back at a young Connie Springer and Sasha Blouse playfully fighting with each other. The second piece offers a more disturbing look at the series' present state of affairs, and shows Eren standing in front of the mysterious tree that is connected to all of the series' events. Images of key events and important people from Eren's past can be seen within the tree. The illustration was drawn by episode director Teruyuki Omine, who has been working on Attack on Titan ever since the series MAPPA took over the anime series' production. Omine previously worked on the romantic comedy Nisekoi and the anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's The Heroic Legend of Arslan.

This pair of illustrations is the third set of art to be released by MAPPA since The Final Season - Part 2's premiere. The animation studio has been releasing a new set of images every week to coincide with the premiere of each new episode in the season. The first set focused on the Eldians, who play a major role in the show's final arcs, while the second pair of illustrations focused on Yelena, the anti-Marleyan rebel who is known for her particularly meme-able face.
The series' latest and final run of episodes premiered on Jan. 9. The second half of the season will adapt the remaining chapters of Hajime Isayama's original manga, which came to an end in early 2021. While the manga's conclusion was met with a mixed reception, hype for the animated version of the show's upcoming finale was still so high that the surge in demand for The Final Season - Part 2's premiere episode was enough to briefly take anime streaming service Crunchyroll offline.
Attack on Titan first premiered in 2009. The series is one of the most successful manga releases of all time, with a global circulation of over 100 million copies. The anime adaptation debuted in 2014, and was originally produced by Wit Studio, the animation company behind Vinland Saga, Ranking of Kings and the upcoming Spy X Family anime. After three critically acclaimed seasons, Wit was replaced by MAPPA, the animation house behind the Jujutsu Kaisen anime and the upcoming Chainsaw Man series.
New episodes of Attack on Titan: The Final Season - Part 2 are released weekly through Crunchyroll, Funimation and Hulu. Isayama's complete manga is now available in English from Kodansha USA.
