Attack on Titan's original animation disc (OAD) episodes will soon be available to stream from Crunchyroll and Funimation.
The eight, 23-minute episodes were previously only available on DVD and Blu-ray. The entire collection of OAD episodes will be available on both Crunchyroll and Funimation on Dec. 19. Crunchyroll will stream the series with subtitles in eight languages, while the dubbed versions of the episodes will be available for streaming in 2022. The OAD episodes adapt select stories from several of the Attack on Titan manga's numerous spinoffs, including the No Regrets manga and the Lost Girls novel series.
The OAD episodes are being released on streaming to give fans a chance to catch up with the complete series before the premiere of Part 2 of the series' final season, which is scheduled to air its first episode on Jan. 9, 2022. The highly anticipated conclusion of the anime series will adapt the remaining chapters of Hajime Isayama's original manga, which came to a controversial end earlier this year. Part 2 will pick up exactly where the first half of the season left off, with Reiner setting off to confront his former friend and ally, Eren Jeager. Attack on Titan's final season is produced by Studio MAPPA, which is also known for its work on the Jujutsu Kaisen anime adaptation. MAPPA took over production of the series after Wit Studio created the show's first three seasons.
Several companies involved the creation and distribution of Attack on Titan have spent the past few months drumming up hype for the show's impending finale. Manga publisher Kodansha has brought a massive gallery of Isayama's art to several anime conventions around the country this fall, including this year's Anime NYC. Crunchyroll recently released a trailer looking back at the series' goriest moments, and MAPPA showed off a new poster that looks back at Eren's journey throughout the series.
Attack on Titan first premiered in 2009 and was published by Kodansha after Shonen Jump, Japan's premiere manga publication, infamously rejected Isayama's pitch for the series. Isayama has gotten the last laugh, as his story has become one of the most successful manga series of all time, with over 100 million copies in circulation worldwide. Previous seasons of the show are also available for streaming through Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu, while the entire manga series is now available in English from Kodansha USA. The show's final run of episodes will be available to stream from Crunchyroll, Funimation and Hulu, with the latter two providing a simulcast of new episodes as they air in Japan.
