Netflix has released the first trailer for Bubble, an all new original anime film that is being created by Attack on Titan's director, Madoka Magica's writer and the Death Note manga's lead artist, among others.
The first trailer for Bubble introduces the movie's colorful, post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo: after a rain of gravity-changing bubbles falls on the city, the abandoned ruins of the metropolis become a battleground for physics-defying gangs of orphaned youths, who use parkour and the area's altered gravity to make death-defying leaps between buildings. The movie focuses on Hibiki, a particularly reckless young man whose life is saved by a girl named Uta, who possesses strange powers.
If the movie's vibrant visual style wasn't enough to catch the attention of anime fans, the team behind the movie certainly will: the new film is being directed by Tetsuro Araki, who previously directed Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and the first three seasons of the Attack on Titan anime. The movie's script is being written by Gen Urobochi, the scribe behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho/Pass, while Takeshi Obata, the artist responsible for Death Note and Platinum End's unique visuals, is handling the film's character designs. They are also joined by legendary anime composer Hiroyuki Sawano, who also worked on Attack on Titan and also created the scores for Promare and Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway. The movie is being produced at Wit Studio, the animation company behind the first three seasons of Attack on Titan and the upcoming anime adaptation of Spy x Family.
In addition to the stacked team behind the scenes, Bubble will also feature a voice cast of anime industry veterans. The film stars Mamoru Miyano, who previously voiced Light Yagami in Death Note and also starred in countless other anime series such as Chihayafuru, Durarara!! and Free! Iwatobi Swim Club, as well as Yuuki Kaji, who is best known for voicing Eren Jaeger in the Attack on Titan anime. The movie will also feature Jun Shison, who previously starred in the live-action adaptations of anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and The Way of the House Husband, and Tasuku Hatanaka, another experienced voice actor who previously starred in Sk8 The Infinity and is known for voicing Denki Kaminari in My Hero Academia.
Bubble will premiere on Netflix's streaming service on April 28, and will be released in theaters in Japan on May 13.
