Without a doubt, Attack on Titan has been one of the most popular anime to ever exist, both inside and outside Japan. Its manga received renewed attention when the anime first aired in 2014, and ever since then it has become more and more popular.
Having said that, the anime isn't without its logical flaws. This article lists 10 such flaws and also includes minor manga spoilers as well.
10 The Female Titans
Women do exist in the world of Attack on Titan, as has been made plenty clear when it comes to the show’s many strong female characters. However, the same cannot be said of the titans. They are overwhelmingly male, and females exist only to discuss key points in the manga (like Annie and Connie’s mother). Apart from that, female titans barely exist, which doesn’t make sense since the Marleyans wanted all the Eldians gone, and not just their men.
9 The Walls
The logistics behind this wall simply make no sense, especially considering the anime takes place in a world that is technologically behind our world. The manga states that the distance between all 3 walls is 100 km, 130 km and 250 km respectively. Simple math tells us that the area inside those walls is almost the size of Afghanistan.
In comparison, the Great Wall of China was much smaller than those walls. The fans of the series are expected to believe that not 1, but 2 more such walls were made by humans and it took them 100 years to build it, as opposed to the 2,000 years that the Great Wall took.
8 How Exactly Was The First Wall Built?
How did those people build walls in a world where titans were constantly attacking and eating them? Did they keep re-making the walls that were broken down by the titans? Did all of the titans stop attacking the humans and waited patiently till they built their walls? Many questions weren't answered even in the manga.
7 Lack Of Black People & Titans
Set in a Europe like place, one would expect to see many people of different ethnicities and varied skin tones in the anime, especially black people. However, not a single dark skinned person is in sight.
The Eldians and Marleyans seem to be an extremely homogenous lot because they’re all fair skinned, which doesn’t make much sense from a mangaka who drew parallels between the Eldeyans and the Jews, and sympathized with both. Realistically, this doesn't match up with the increasingly diversified demographics of the Western world of today.
6 Levi's Real Rank
He’s regularly addressed as Heicho, which is simply the Japanese word for leader. However, for an anime that goes into great details explaining every aspect of its show, it does seem odd that Levi’s rank is never openly explained. While Erwin is clearly the man in charge of the survey corps, Levi’s position is never explicitly made clear, and nor is his age.
5 The Awkward Pacing
In the first few episodes, the audience understands the world Eren lives in, the threat of titans, everybody fighting an unexpected attack from the Titans, Eren dying and being resurrected as a titan.
However, once this discovery is made, three entire episodes are wasted on accomplishing one task – to get Eren’s titan seal the hole in the outer wall. Another three-four episodes are wasted in the Survey Corps surveying the walls for damages, coming across titans, fighting them and then dying. While they do make for stunning visuals, the abrupt slowing down of the pacing didn’t make much sense, seeing how much the manga already had to offer content wise.
4 Levi’s Abuse Of Eren
During Eren’s trial, Levi’s physical abuse of him was completely unnecessary. He could have slapped him or verbally abused him and it would have been enough for the higher-ups to consider transferring Eren in his charge, but he doesn’t do so. He takes the most viciously violent route and abuses a minor, just because he can.
3 Why Did No One Stop Levi?
Since prisoners have trials and have a right to defend themselves in this world, how does it make sense for a middle to high ranked Survey Corp officer to bypass the law’s proceedings and to take matter into his own hands?
What’s worse is how everybody, including the nobles and the judge, simply sat there and watched it all happen. Why didn’t any of the guards rush in to stop Levi? Why didn’t any of the military personnel? None of them knew the reason behind Levi’s behavior, so what made them sit through all of it?
2 The Logistics Of 3D Maneuver Gear
Practically speaking, the gears don’t make sense. Not only are grown humans able to fly past trees in a matter of minutes, they are able to magically change their direction without it affecting their speed and frankly, their bodies. Suddenly halting one's body when in high speed always results in broken bones, and spinal injuries should have been very common among the Survey Corps.
1 The Horses
In one of its earlier episodes, the characters discuss that meat is rare because animals are rare. It’s tough and expensive to raise animals in a world where food and farmland is limited, which is a valid logical point. So how did the military find horses that number in the thousands, to help them explore the world on the outside? Where are these horses even stationed? How did all the other animals perish but the horses conveniently survive?
