As a Sailor Guardian and the daughter of Queen Serenity, Usagi Tsukino is far from an average girl. While she was Princess Serenity, she was not human, hailing from the Moon Kingdom thousands of years prior to the events of the anime. Meanwhile, as Usagi, Princess Serenity is reincarnated as a human student and becomes one of the most iconic magical girls, Sailor Moon, who's got more than a few tricks, quirks and secrets up her sleeve.
Usagi Tsukino Has More Than One Sailor Moon Transformation
As with most magical girls, the Sailor Guardians, including Sailor Moon, transform into their superpowered alter egos. By proclaiming, "Moon Prism Power, make up," Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon. When transforming, what she initially wears disappears and is replaced by her Sailor Moon uniform. She uses her Transformation Brooch to achieve this, which she wears on the bow of her school uniform to keep on hand while she is in civilian mode.
Along with being able to transform into Sailor Moon, Usagi has the ability to change into several other versions of herself. When yelling, "Crisis, make up," Sailor Moon transforms into Super Sailor Moon, who's empowered by the other Sailor Guardians. If she proclaims, "Moon Eternal, make up," then she becomes Eternal Sailor Moon. She can also change how she looks by using her Disguise Pen and saying, "Moon Power, change me into a..." Whatever she ends the phrase with is what she changes into, like a newscaster in Season 1, Episode 3, "The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness: Protect the Girls in Love."
Princess Serenity's Wings
Several versions of Usagi feature her with wings. Her aforementioned Sailor Moon Eternal transformation sees the most drastic change in her Sailor Guardian appearance, with Usagi developing a pair of white wings. She also has a more impressive set of angelic wings on several occasions as Serenity.
In Season 4, Episode 166, "Dreams Forever: Fill the Heavens with Light," Helios, aka Pegasus, lends his powers to Usagi and Chibiusa to save them from a deadly fall, with the pair sprouting wings before the worst could happen. Usagi also grows wings in Season 5, Episode 200, "Usagi's Love: The Moonlight Illuminates the Galaxy," turning into a winged Princess Serenity after grabbing the Sword of Sealing. While these wings only appear when Usagi is Serenity, it is unclear if this is a natural ability for the princess or if it is triggered when she interacts with specific beings and objects, like Helios and the Sword of Sealing.
Sailor Moon Is the Host of the Silver Crystal
The first season of Sailor Moon is dedicated to finding the Moon Princess, as well as the Silver Crystal. This crystal is one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe. It can recall memories, revive the dead, transform monsters into humans, heal people, fend off dark energy, reach the furthest corners of the galaxy and create energy blasts and protective shields. Turns out the Silver Crystal the Sailor Guardians and Queen Beryl were looking for was hidden within Usagi this whole time, who has no recollection of being Princess Serenity until Season 1, Episode 34, "The Shining Silver Crystal: The Moon Princess Appears."
In the episode, Tuxedo Mask jumps in front of a shard to protect Sailor Moon, dying as a result. However, Usagi cries for him, and her tear summons the Rainbow Crystals to her. These crystals mix with her tear and form the Silver Crystal. The Silver Crystal reveals Sailor Moon to be the princess, returns Usagi and Tuxedo Mask's memories, revives Tuxedo Mask and incapacitates Zoisite in the following episode, proving to be an impressive weapon, despite being hidden in a 14-year-old girl.
Usagi Tsukino Has Superpowered Tears
An on going joke in the anime is that Usagi is a cry baby. Far from being a cool and collected soldier, Sailor Moon isn't one to hide her emotions, and it is clear when she is under duress. However, her emotions are often a positive, with her tears saving the day on several occasions.
In Season 1, Episode 1, "The Crybaby: Usagi's Beautiful Transformation," Sailor Moon is overwhelmed when facing Morga, and she breaks out into tears. Tuxedo Mask appears to tell her that, "crying isn't going to solve any of your problems;" however, it's her wailing moments later that incapacitates Morga, giving Usagi a window to destroy her. Sailor Moon's crying also saves Tuxedo Mask's life in Season 1, Episode 35, "Returning Memories: Usagi and Mamoru's Past." After protecting Usagi, Tuxedo Mask is mortally wounded, but, thanks to the Silver Crystal, Sailor Moon's tears heal him.
The Sailor Guardians' Reincarnations and Neo-Queen Serenity's Age
As Sailor Moon unfolds, it's revealed that the Sailor Guardians are reincarnations of their past lives. Thousands of years before the events of the anime, Queen Serenity ruled the Solar System from her moon kingdom with the Sailor Guardians acting as mentors for her daughter, Princess Serenity. Due to her royal lineage and the era of peace, Princess Serenity was not a member of the Sailor Guardians; however, this peace was broken by war. Queen Serenity used the Silver Crystal to save the souls of a select few who died, including the Sailor Guardians and Princess Serenity, who was reborn on Earth as Usagi.
While reincarnation gives Princess Serenity a second chance at life as an everyday girl, it's clear she will live much longer than any normal human. With the introduction of Chibiusa, who is Usagi and Mamoru's daughter from the future, fans realize Usagi will live for at least 1,000 more years. Chibiusa is from the 30th century, and as Season 2 progresses, viewers learn that Usagi becomes Neo-Queen Serenity and establishes the new Silver Millennium on Earth. She still appears to be young as Neo-Queen Serenity, and with the Silver Crystal, it wouldn't be a surprise if Sailor Moon lived an impossibly long life.
