Boruto: Code May Have Turned His Closest Ally Into an Enemy

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter 67 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Rift,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

In the Boruto manga, Eida's deal with Code has been an uneasy one. Knowing Momoshiki was possessing Naruto's son and providing the teen with Ōtsutsuki DNA, Eida agreed to use her clairvoyance to help Code kidnap him. That way Boruto could be used as a sacrifice for the Ten Tails, while Kawaki, who had Isshiki's alien genetics, could then be spared so she could strike up a romance with him.

Code abided by it because with Amado's limiters in his body, he needed all the help he could get. In Chapter 67, however, Code broke their terms of agreement -- which may have turned Eida into his newest enemy.

Code is a manipulator but was afraid to try anything with Eida because she saw (and knew) all. Bit by bit though, Code realized the cyborg had limits too, which is why he was secretly plotting contingency measures. Part of him did think Eida could turn on him, after all, just like Amado did when he defected from Kara to Konoha, leaving with restricted access to the power Isshiki left in his passing.

This led to Code being beaten down in battle when Kawaki unleashed his strength. It was all due to Amado tinkering with Kawaki's body in the Hidden Leaf, making him a perfect copy of Isshiki. Code had to recalibrate because not only did Kawaki take Boruto out, robbing Momoshiki of a vessel, but killing Boruto outright would prevent Code from using the Hokage's son as a sacrifice.

Thus, he contemplated how to kidnap Kawaki, attacking him with full force. Eida felt affronted, with Code admitting in their telepathic link he had to adjust their deal. She didn't like this, and things went from bad to worse when Kawaki was about to blast Code away with a giant fireball. Code reacted quickly, improvising and teleporting Daemon in from Eida's arms. Eida's brother then reflected the bomb, almost killing Kawaki, before Code sent the kid back and fled.

This left Eida upset because Code didn't ask permission, not to mention he put the two boys she loved in danger. This intrusive, disobedient attitude has her wondering if she made the right truce with the right person. Thankfully, Boruto's alive and despite Momoshiki no longer being able to take over his body, he has full Ōtsutsuki DNA in him. Thus, he's still a vessel Code can use.

That said, Eida won't be as trusting anymore as Boruto continues. She knows Code will go for Kawaki the moment Boruto is no longer an option, so the angry cyborg is reassessing the plan. Eida warned Code they need to renegotiate or else she will have Daemon destroy him -- a scary scenario Code has been trying to avoid. He knows how monstrous the youth is, so it'll be an interesting chess game to see if they betray each other moving forward.
