Android 15 returns in new art from Dragon Ball Super's Toyotarou.
As seen on the official Dragon Ball website, the short and brightly colored robot was highlighted in a new sketch created by Toyotarou, the artist behind the Dragon Ball Super manga and series creator Akira Toriyama's appointed successor. Toyotarou sketched the mostly forgotten android to help promote the upcoming Japanese premiere of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which features two new Red Ribbon Army androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. Android 15 originally appeared as a secondary villain in the 1992 movie Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13. While it was mostly presented as an emotionless killing machine focused on taking down Goku, Toyotarou's drawing portrays the small fighter with a smug smile.
Like the other androids who appeared in the main Dragon Ball Z anime series, Androids 13, 14, and 15 were created by the villainous Dr. Gero. Though the real Gero is murdered by Android 17 before the start of the movie, the trio of his remaining creations still set out to complete the mad scientist's final wish, which is to kill Goku. Though Android 13 and 14 prove to be a match for Vegeta and Future Trunks in their base forms, the two androids are quickly dispatched by the father and son duo after they transform into Super Saiyans.
The Red Ribbon Army will return in the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The new movie features an all-new animation style that seeks to recreate the iconic style of Akira Toriyama's hand drawn art using 3D models and CGI animation. According to series producer Akio Iyoku, while the Red Ribbon Army is still trying to get revenge on Goku for their defeat decades ago, the movie will mostly focus on the master-disciple relationship between Piccolo and Gohan, as the duo team up against Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. The movie recently revealed new designs for a now teenaged Goten and Trunks, as well as confirmed a North American premiere window of summer 2022.
Toyotarou, meanwhile, is still working on the on-going Dragon Ball Super manga. The sequel series is in the final act of the current Granolah the Survivor saga, which introduced several new characters, including the eponymous Granolah, a vengeful assassin who blames the Saiyans for the extinction of his race, and featured the debut of Vegeta's newest form, the Beerus-inspired Ultra Ego. The latest chapter of the manga was released on Feb. 20, and the next installment is scheduled to premiere on March 18.
