Lord of the Rings’ Elijah Wood Reacts to War of the Rohirrim Anime Image

Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood seems hyped for The War of the Rohirrim animated movie.

Wood, who portrayed central protagonist Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's original film trilogy, responded to the reveal of new concept art from the animated film with an emphatic "YESSSSS" on Twitter. The new feature-length prequel is set 250 years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, and takes place in human kingdom of Rohan, so Frodo will presumably not appear in the new work. Regardless, Wood seems excited for the new film, which is being produced as collaboration between New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation.

The newly released concept art that Wood was reacting too depicts a massive arming laying seige to Edoras, the capital city of Rohan. The city was also the setting for parts of The Two Towers, the second film in trilogy. The new movie will focus on the story of Helm Hammerhand, the last of Rohan's first line of kings.

The feature-length prequel will be directed by anime industry veteran Kenji Kamiyama, who previously co-directed the critically acclaimed anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The movie's animation will be created by Sola Entertainment, the digital animation studio that Kamiyama previously worked with on the CG-animated Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 and the spinoff series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which recently completed its broadcast run on the Adult Swim network.

"I’m in awe of the creative talent who have come together to bring this epic, heart-pounding story to life, from the mastery of Kenji Kamiyama to a truly stellar cast," said executive producer Philippa Boyens. Boyens previously served as a member of the screen-writing team on both the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy as well all three of The Hobbit movies. Boyens' daughter, Phoebe Gittins and writing partner Arty Papageorgiou wrote the new prequel's screenplay. The film's voice cast has yet to be officially announced.

While the animated movie and Amazon Studio's upcoming Rings of Power live-action series both serve as prequels to The Lord of the Rings, the two projects are unconnected, as the upcoming Prime Video series is set millenia before the events of the War of the Rohirrim. The first teaser trailer for the live-action series was shown during this year's Super Bowl, which revealed that Galadriel will be one of the series' main characters and that it will be set during the Second Age.

The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is scheduled to open on April 12, 2024.
