FreakAngels Animated Series Drops New Clip, Casting Details

Crunchyroll has released a new clip and casting details for its adaptation of the award-winning steampunk webcomic, FreakAngels.

The clip, which is available on Crunchyroll's official YouTube account, highlights the tense relationships between many of the main characters. Set in a post-apocalyptic Great Britain, FreakAngels follows twelve 23-year-old psychics who live in the ruined remains of Whitechapel. When an exiled friend returns, their fragile peace is shattered and the group is forced to contend with both external and internal threats.

Several members of the series' cast have been revealed as well; Marsha Thomason (Castlevania) is playing KK, a gearhead and the violent big sister of the titular group, and Julie Nathanson (Final Fantasy XV) voices Arkady, who appears to be a playful child but might actually be the most powerful individual in the world. Jack, a lonewolf sailor, is played by Tru Valentino (Psychonauts 2), the pacifistic Sirkka is voiced by Nazneen Contractor (Star Wars Resistance) and medic Miki is played by Mallory Low (DC Super Hero Girls). Other members of the cast include Christian Lees (PISTOL), Daniel Gillies (Spider-Man 2), Chris Geere (Detective Pikachu), Victoria Atkin (The Sinking City), Anniwaa Buachie (Mass Effect: Andromeda) and Darren Jacobs (Genshin Impact).

The creative team behind FreakAngels features multiple anime industry veterans like character designer Hiroshi Shimizu, who designed the characters for the futuristic box anime Megablox and also worked on classics like Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist. Osamu Masuyama, who is probably best known for his contributions to Made in Abyss, Spirited Away and Your Name, serves as the series' art director.

FreakAngels is the latest original series to be produced by anime streamer Crunchyroll. The streaming service also created High Guardian Spice, which follows four young girls who are training to become guardians of their city, and Fena: Pirate Princess, a swashbuckling fantasy that follows the titular orphan as she endeavors to escape her captors and search for the place she truly belongs. Crunchyroll is also producing an adaptation of the classic Sega video game franchise, Shenmue, which is expected to premiere on Feb. 5.

The original FreakAngels webcomic ran from 2008 to 2011. It won several awards, including the Eagle Award for Best Webcomic in 2010 and 2012, and was featured on Rolling Stone's list of the "50 Best Non-Superhero Graphic Novels."

FreakAngels is scheduled to premiere on Crunchyroll on Jan. 27 as part of the streaming service's winter anime season.
