Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba already has two "huge" events planned for 2022.
The official Demon Slayer website announced that on Jan. 18 at 8:00 P.M. JST, the series will host a TV special on Japanese streaming service Abema. The show's producers are promising to reveal two events related to the anime series in 2022, and will also announce more information about the show's currently on-going Entertainment District arc. The special will feature appearances from Tanjiro's voice actor, Natsuki Hanae, as well as the series' producer, Yuma Takahashi. In addition to the announcements about the future of the series, the special will also look back on the events of the show's second season.
There's been some anxiety over how many episodes are left in Season 2 of the popular shonen anime: iQIYI, the Chinese streaming service that officially distributes Demon Slayer in the region, previously listed the whole season as only being 18 episodes long, 8 episodes shorter than the anime's first season. The first seven episodes of the season were spent on a televised recut of the events of the Mugen Train movie. The 14th episode of the second season is scheduled to premiere on Jan. 16, so if iQIYI's original schedule was correct, then the season is already nearing its conclusion. Speculation has already begun if the new announcements being teased by the show's producers could have something to do with additional episodes or some other type of continuation for the season.
The anime has yet to announce any plans for the series beyond its current Entertainment District arc. The show's current arc debuted on Dec. 5 and adapts one of the more beloved parts of Koyoharu Gotoge's original manga. This chapter of Tanjiro's story sees him, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke teaming up with the flamboyant Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui to stop a powerful demon that's been hunting for victims inside of a city's red light district.
Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer manga came to a conclusion in late 2020, ending a four-year run that saw the relatively new series becoming the eight best-selling manga series of all time, with over 150 million copies in circulation around the world. Despite the story now being over, the series has remained one of the most popular anime and manga franchises in the world: the series' first movie, Mugen Train, is the highest grossing anime film of all time, and the manga series still managed to be the second best-selling manga of 2021 in Japan, moving 29.5 million copies in the last 12 months alone, and coming in just half-a-million copies behind the year's top series, Jujutsu Kaisen.
