Anime fans have very strong opinions when it comes to the main characters of a series. This can especially ring true for the leading ladies of anime. Some girls steal the hearts of the audience right away. Meanwhile, others earn the collective hatred of the entire fanbase.
Then there are female characters who fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. Some may love them, and others may hate them. Either way, everyone has a passionate stance that can even lead to heated debates between fans. Whether it's because of their actions, personality, or roles in the story, these female characters have created a divide between fans.
10 Medusa Is A Rotten Villain To The Core (Soul Eater)
Medusa Gorgon is one of the main antagonists of Soul Eater and one of the greatest threats to the DWMA. Out of the villains in the series, she is consistently one of the most hated.
Many fans despise her for her trickery at the beginning of the series. Others hate her for abusing her child, Crona. However, many fans love her for these things as well. She is considered one of the best villains of Soul Eater and is, without a doubt, one of the most important.
9 Hana Uzaki Received Instant Backlash (Uzaki-Chan Wants To Hang Out)
When the series Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out was set to release, many were instantly enraged by the titular main character. Most of the hatred comes from Hana Uzaki's design, many claiming it is too unrealistic. Before it even began, she had become the most hated character of the series.
However, since its release, many have come to love not only the series but Uzaki-chan herself as well. Fans now retaliate, saying the hatred is unwarranted and that people should give Uzaki a chance.
8 Chika Isn't Always The Fan-Favorite (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War)
It is no secret that Kaguya-sama: Love is War has exploded into popularity since its release. While everyone loves the antics of Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, many completely fell in love with supporting girl Chika Fujiwara. From her cute design to her hilarious quirks, many fans adore her.
However, while most love Chika, many fans have grown tired of her. What was once seen as cute and charming from Chika is now seen as stale and annoying. She's still one of the most popular characters of the series, but it seems that the novelty of her cuteness is wearing off.
7 Kagome's Attitude Doesn't Sit Well With Fans (Inuyasha)
Since the beginning of Inuyasha, fans have had conflicting opinions on protagonist Kagome Higurashi. Many have loved her from the start, rooted for her and her love for Inuyasha, and despised Kikyo for getting in the way. On the other side of things, plenty of fans find Kagome to be nothing but annoying.
They say she is a brat with a snotty attitude, and many dislike her abuse of her "sit boy" power over Inuyasha. As she's developed and become a stronger character, a lot of the hate for her has subsided. Nevertheless, there are plenty of hold-outs who even believe that Inuyasha deserves better than her.
6 Yuno's Brand Of Craziness Isn't For Everyone (Future Diary)
Everyone can admit that Yuno Gasai is undoubtedly the most interesting character in Future Diary. However, her personality is more than a little extreme, to say the least. Some love this about her, noting her as the pioneer of the Yandere trend in anime.
For others, her obsession with Yukiteru and her violent behavior are more than they can stomach. For better or for worse, Yuno Gasai is a vital part of anime and has left a lasting footprint that will influence anime for years to come.
5 Mikasa Lacks Development According To Some Fans (Attack on Titan)
Mikasa Ackerman is one of the most popular characters in the hit series Attack on Titan. Despite that, there are still many fans who can't stand her. They claim that her character is bland and underdeveloped compared to the rest of the cast. Some also hate her due to her unwavering love for Eren, finding her devotion too extreme.
However, there are just as many fans who think she's a great character and a much-welcome strong female in a genre filled with so many weak damsels. No matter the reason, fans are definitely torn on their opinions when it comes to the leading female.
4 Misa Amane Can Be An Annoying Dumb Blonde (Death Note)
When Misa Amane first arrives on the scene in Death Note, fans aren't sure what to make of her. Some think she's cute, fun, and a great addition to the main cast, balancing out the heavy storyline. Others, however, write her off immediately as a ditzy love interest. There's no doubt that Misa brings a new layer of interest to the story, blindly following Light no matter how dark his mission becomes.
However, many believe that Misa's character devolves as the series progresses. Though she starts as a formidable member of Kira's team, she slowly becomes the ditzy blonde many expected and loses a great deal of her use. Aside from her obsessive love for Kira, she eventually brings little else to the table.
3 Asuna Feels Like Wasted Potential (Sword Art Online)
Anime fans all have strong feelings when it comes to Sword Art Online. Some love it, others hate it, but either way, everyone has an opinion on the characters. Asuna is often cited as one of the best characters in the series. She is strong, capable, and beautiful, a powerful combination for a leading lady.
Though she's usually a fan favorite, some argue that while she had great potential early on in the series, it later becomes wasted as she gets sidelined for Kirito to take the spotlight all on his own. Not only that, others claim that her personality is bland, and what little development she does get is usually for the worse. No matter how anyone feels about her, there's no denying the influence Asuna has on Sword Art Online and anime as a whole.
2 Akito Sohma Is Forgiven By Some Fans, But Not All (Fruits Basket)
Throughout most of Fruits Basket, Akito Sohma is the fearsome head of the Sohma family and has a tight grip on everyone within the estate. Her mental instability, jealousy, and need to be needed create a toxic and abusive environment and leave every member of the Sohma family broken and traumatized. However, she has a change of heart, thanks to Tohru's influence.
Much like the Sohmas themselves, some fans love the new Akito and readily forgive her, while others can't bring themselves to forget the atrocities she committed.
1 Sakura Haruno Is One Of The Most Hated And Most Loved Females Of Anime (Naruto)
Every anime fan has at least heard someone say how much they hate Sakura Haruno from Naruto. Hoards of fans have expressed their hatred for her throughout the years, whether it's because she's useless, a crybaby, or anything in-between. Many claim she is weak and poorly written, with little to no development from start to finish. Others hate her because of her love for Sasuke, finding it hard to believe she can still love him after everything he's done. Fans also hate her for her poor treatment of Naruto throughout the series, finding her to be selfish, bratty, and just plain rude.
However, for every fan who hates Sakura, there is another who adores her. Fans of Sakura believe she develops wonderfully, becoming a much stronger woman by the series end and even more so in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Whether the hate for her is deserved or not, Sakura is a character that everyone has something to say about.
