The Witcher’s Next Anime Comes Directly From the Books

Earlier in the year, Netflix announced the development of several spinoff projects tying into The Witcher. One of them included a currently untitled anime. Since its announcement, Netflix remained silent on the topic. That changed recently thanks to executive producer Tomek Baginski.

In an interview with Naekranie, Baginski revealed, "We're at a fairly early stage, I've recently read the first draft." Though he did not divulge specific information or potential titles, he explained, "It is based on one of the stories we know from the world of The Witcher, so the source is entirely from [Andrzej Sapkowski's] books, but which story I would prefer to keep a secret."

Already, Baginski's comments distinguish the upcoming anime from the tie-in film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which was released in August and provided fans of Netflix's The Witcher with background information leading into Season 2 of the hit-fantasy show-- details regarding Vesemir, the fall of Kaer Morhen and the School of the Wolf. The events of the anime tie-in were largely based on small hints provided in Sapkowski's novels, since the books do not fully explore or detail Vesemir's past or the history of Kaer Morhen. It is worth noting that The Witcher showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich previously clarified that the anime will not be a continuation of Nightmare of the Wolf and will center on other, potentially familiar character.

The upcoming anime was announced at Netflix's TUDUM event alongside The Witcher Season 3 and a family-friendly project meant to introduce children to the world and themes of The Witcher. But these are not the only projects audiences can look forward to.

A limited prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin, was announced in summer 2020 and has since completed production. The show is set 1,200 years before the events of the main series, in the aftermath of the event known as the Conjunction of the Spheres. Blood Origin centers on a number of brand-new elven characters -- Éile, Fjall and Scian -- and will explore the creation of the Continent's first witcher, according to previously released descriptions.

Before any of these many projects hit the screen, audiences can await the premiere of The Witcher Season 2, scheduled to arrive on Netflix on Dec. 17. The show introduces the live-action appearance of Vesemir and his many apprentices at the School of the Wolf, including Eskel, Lambert and Coën, who will be introduced to Ciri when Geralt of Rivia takes her to Kaer Morhen.
