Sailor Moon Cosplay Recreates Iconic Transformation Sequence

Sailor Moon has always been a popular character to cosplay, but a cosplayer provided a new take on the character by capturing her in the middle of her iconic transformation sequence.

Cosplayer Yalda, known by her Instagram handle @Yaldamn, showed off the unique costume in a picture taken at this year's Anime NYC convention. The right half of the costume portrays Usagi Tsukino in her everyday school uniform, while the left half represents her appearance as she transforms in the defender of justice known as Sailor Moon, complete with blooming ribbons and an ethereal, pink tone. Sailor Moon's lengthy transformation sequences were featured in almost every episode of the classic anime and became a staple of the magical girl anime genre moving forward.

More of Yalda's incredibly original cosplays can be seen on her Instagram page. In addition to her mid-transformation take on Sailor Moon, the cosplayer has also recreated the character's appearance from the VHS release of the series, and has also portrayed a variety of other characters, including Into the Spider-Verse's version of Doc Ock and Fire Emblem Three House's Manuela.

This new take on Sailor Moon is just one of several inventive and original costumes to come out of the cosplay community in recent weeks. Sunny Maolo recently created an amazing Neon Genesis Evangelion costume based on Unit 01 that captures that weapon's bestial appearance and movements, while Reddito Defiant_Finance8798 showed that everyone how to recreate Vegeta's look without breaking the bank.

Fans looking for more Sailor Moon in live-action should also check out the series' upcoming stage plays, which will be broadcast worldwide in early 2022. In addition to the stage adaptation of the classic shojo series, production company Japan 2.5D Stage World will host performances of the Naruto and My Hero Academia plays.

Sailor Moon was created by artist Naoko Takeuchi and first published in Japan in 1991. The anime adaptation was one of the first shojo shows to be localized and broadcast in the United States and Canada. After developing a small but dedicated cult following in syndication, Sailor Moon gained mainstream attention when it, alongside other iconic 90s anime series such as Dragon Ball Z and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, were featured on Cartoon Network's Toonami block. The series is regarded as one of the most influential shojo and magical girl series of all time and remains popular to this day. The most recent animated adaptation of Takeuchi's manga, Sailor Moon Eternal, was released as a Netflix exclusive earlier this year.
