The long-awaited Spy x Family anime adaptation and several other new anime series will premiere on Crunchyroll in 2022.
The streaming company announced several new shows for its 2022 lineup during its panel at Anime NYC. The biggest catch is CloverWorks and Wit Studio's upcoming anime adaptation of Spy x Family. The series is currently scheduled to begin airing sometime in 2022 and will be directed by Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and Hunter X Hunter's Kazuhiro Furuhashi, with character designs from The Promised Neverland's Kazuaki Shimada. The new show is based on Tatsuya Endo's critically acclaimed manga of the same name, which is serialized on Shueisha's digital Shonen Jump+ service. Spy x Family has a worldwide circulation of more than 12.5 million copies and was nominated for a Harvey Award this year. Crunchyroll also released a new trailer for the series.
Spy x Family tells the story of the super-spy Loid Forger, codename "Twilight," a loner and master of espionage who has never failed a mission. Forger's latest objective requires him to pretend like he's the head of a traditional household, but things get complicated when his fake wife turns out to be an infamous assassin and the child he adopted is actually an escaped government experiment with psychic powers.
The romantic comedy A Couple of Cuckoos is also slated to premiere on Crunchyroll's streaming service next year. The series tells the story of two high school students who were switched at birth and raised by the wrong families. After a series of misunderstandings, the two are brought together again in an arranged marriage. A Couple of Cuckoos does not currently have a premiere date.
Crunchyroll will also stream Dance Dance Danseur, a new series from MAPPA, the animation studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Yuri!!! on Ice. The new show is based on a manga by George Asakura and will be directed by Munehisa Sakai, who previously worked on Sailor Moon Crystal. The series tells the story of Junpei Murao, a young man who was captivated by ballet as a child but gave up on dancing after his father died. Now in high school, Junpei meets a new girl who rekindles his desire to become a professional dancer.
Other series featured at Crunchyroll's panel include The Dawn of the Witch, a magical fantasy series, and the romantic comedy Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie, which are both scheduled to premiere next April. The streaming company also highlighted the new psychological drama Tomodachi Game, which is based on a comic that has sold over two million copies. Crunchyroll also confirmed that its original series In/Spectre will return for a second season in 2022.
