WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter #63 of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, “Ask No Questions,” by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.
With the Boruto series making the shocking move of killing off Kurama, fans are wondering what's in store for the de-powered Naruto. The manga has him struggling to track Kawaki down as Code goes after the teen and Boruto himself, while the anime has the Hokage's science team in Konoha wondering if Naruto can ever reach the chakra and power heights of old.
Interestingly, Sakura wonders if the separation of the Tailed Beast might even have an adverse effect on the leader, which leaves folks eager for Orochimaru to return. However, while that seems somewhat practical, this predicament is actually a great opportunity to bring Kabuto back into play instead.
Now, Orochimaru is an understandable want, as he's in his lab on the outskirts of the Hidden Leaf. He's done immense work on the DNA of Naruto's predecessors as well as the Uchiha, but ultimately, he's a mad scientist and a monster who can't be trusted. Tampering or giving him access to Naruto's body could revamp his power lust, allowing him to break bad and attempt another coup -- especially as Isshiki left a Ten Tails behind.
With Kabuto, though, coming back to help fits his personality as he's found peace and is running Konoha's orphanage. His heart is pure again -- especially working with the Shin Uchiha clones -- and he's just as effective a scientist as Orochimaru. The snake ninja was his mentor, after all, and Kabuto did resurrect key Hokages, not realizing Kaguya was playing him all along in the Naruto series.
The point is, he's less likely to use his knowledge for something bad, plus he's quicker with research and results than Orochimaru has been. It'd be a great way to show Kabuto has completed redemption, not to mention he and Naruto have always gotten along. He even looked out for Naruto for a time as he too was bullied as a kid, so it would once more give fans their warm chemistry and a dynamic we haven't seen much of in some time.
We've just gotten so much Orochimaru in the past, reviving him would be predictable and trite. Kabuto coming in, though, would show Boruto hasn't forgotten old, important faces who are experts in their field. More so, Kabuto did want to create a better world, unlike Orochimaru who just wanted to rule a razed planet.
Ironically, Kabuto and Naruto can even relate to fatherhood now, giving us something of substance over style. Kabuto would want to heal the Hokage so he could protect Boruto and Konoha's kids such as Kawaki -- who, ironically, have DNA issues he can attend to as well with their Karma seals and Ōtsutsuki rewriting.
He might even experiment on Sasuke's lost Rinnegan since he knows a lot about Uchiha genetics, so ultimately, Kabuto feels like Boruto's wiser option for a cure rather than a traitor who was obsessed with wayward kids and dominating the alliance via sadistic, inhumane projects.
