CloverWorks, the animation studio behind Wonder Egg Priority and The Promised Neverland, has announced its new original anime series, Tokyo 24th Ward (known in Japan as Tokyo 24-ku), which is set to premiere next year.
A new trailer has been released to give viewers a preview of what the story has to offer, teasing the main three characters and the story's setting. Tokyo 24th Ward takes place on an artificial island that floats above Tokyo Bay -- Kyokutō Hōreigai Tokubetsu Chiku (Far East Special District Outside of the Law), nicknamed the 24th Ward. The story follows three friends -- Ran Akagi, Koki Suido and Shuta Aoi -- who despite their differences, always hang out. After an incident dramatically changes their relationship, the three young men each try to protect the residents of the 24th Ward in their own way.
Naokatsu Tsuda (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Black Butler) is directing the new series at CloverWorks with Vio Shimokura making their anime industry debut as the show's primary writer. The creative team also includes Shuji Sogabe (Persona 3 the Movie #1 Spring of Birth), Kanako Nono (Prince of Stride: Alternative) and Takahiro Kishida (That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Naruto the Movie: Guardians of the Crescent Moon Kingdom) as character designers and Hideyuki Fukasawa (Fate/Grand Order The Movie Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot, Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind) as music composer.
So far, three members of the voice cast have been confirmed: Junya Enoki (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train, Komi Can't Communicate) is voicing Shuta, Kaito Ishikawa (Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, The Rising of the Shield Hero) voices Koki and Yuma Uchida (Orient, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai) is playing Ran.
Tokyo 24th Ward is one of several new anime that are currently scheduled to debut in 2022. Other new anime series already confirmed for the new year include The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Love After World Domination, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody, The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt, Girls' Frontline and Saiyuki Reload ZEROIN. 2022 will also see the return of multiple fan-favorite anime like The Case Study of Vanitas, Ascendance of a Bookworm, Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? and Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!
