Quintessential Quintuplets Movie Gets Teaser Trailer, Premiere Window

The Quintessential Quintuplets movie has narrowed down its premiere window and released its first teaser trailer.

The short teaser trailer shows the titular quintuplets enjoying themselves at a waterpark before confirming that the movie will be released sometime in the summer of 2022. The movie will continue the story from where the second season of the popular rom-com anime left off. The series' official Twitter account also revealed a new poster image for the upcoming animated film.

The Quintessential Quintuplets tells the story of Futaro Uesugi, an academically gifted student whose future prospects are held back by his family's immense debt and his own tactless attitude. Needing cash, Uesugi agrees to work as a tutor for the wealthy Nakano family and their five identical quintuplet daughters, who are the same age as Uesugi. The story reveals in its opening chapter that Uesugi will eventually go on to marry one of the five sisters, and leaves readers guessing throughout the series as to which one he will end up with.

The series was created by Negi Haruba and was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2017 - 2020. Quintuplets was one of the best-selling manga series in Japan during its serialized run and won a Kodansha Manga Award. An anime adaptation was created by Tezuka Productions, which aired its first season in 2019. A second season was originally scheduled to debut in 2020, but due to delays related to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the second season was not released until 2021. The new movie will serve as direct sequel to the anime series, and will pick up the story from where Season 2 left off.

In September, it was announced that Haruba next' manga series, Sentai Daishikkaku, was being placed on indefinite hiatus while the author recovered from an unspecified health condition. Sentai Daishikkaku originally premiered in February and is Haruba's first work to be released after the conclusion of The Quintessential Quintuplets the previous year. Haruba is one of many manga creators who have had to put their series on hold this year due to health issues; My Hero Academia has taken multiple breaks throughout the year, while fellow Shonen Jump hit Jujutsu Kaisen took a two month long break this summer due to concerns surrounding Gege Akutami's health. The health of manga creators and the grueling schedules they are often required to follow has been a sensitive topic in the industry ever since the sudden and unexpected death of Berserk creator Kentaro Miura in May.

An international release date for The Quintessential Quintuplets movie has yet to be announced. The first two seasons of the anime are available for streaming on both Crunchyroll and Funimation, while the manga is available in English from Kodansha USA.
