Fena: Pirate Princess – All the Loose Ends the Finale Needs to Answer

Fena: Pirate Princess is a Netflix original anime that has drawn in skeptical fans with its enjoyable plot. The anime has it all with intriguing world-building in the detailed backdrops, lovable characters, and fantastic interpersonal relationships. The central mystery of Fena's link to Joan D'Arc and Eden has kept the anime's momentum moving forward in a well-paced adventure journey.

However, like many new anime series, Fena: Pirate Princess is constrained to 12 episodes and the finale is fast approaching. Plot points that were built up in earlier episodes have not yet been answered. While it's unlikely that the finale will be able to flesh them all out, hopefully the core questions will be answered or a second season will be announced. Here are all the mysteries we hope to see concluded.

What Is Grace's Connection to Fena, Abel & Their Pendants?

In Fena: Pirate Princess' very first episode, Fena Houtman is introduced with a blue heart pendant that seems to hold a lot of significance. Through an encounter with Abel Bluefield, Fena finds out Abel has the same necklace and, in his portrait, Helena also wears this mysterious pendant. Through story beats and context clues, it can be inferred that Helena passed this necklace to Fena, her daughter, while Grace O'Malley had the lookalike pendant created for Abel. This would explain why there are two pendants, and it's possible the anime created this plot point to hint at Abel's connection to Fena's mother.

However, this raises more questions about Grace's involvement with the whole affair. The pirate is present in Episode 1, seen smiling deviously amidst the flames of the sinking ship. This establishes that she was part of the massacre that drives future events but this involvement was never fully explained. It's also strange to think that Grace would give this pendant to Abel given that she sleeps with him and the necklace symbolizes his undying love for Helena.

What Happened to Shitan's Older Brother, Kei?

Yukihisa Sanada is the enigmatic priest of Goblin Island. Though he appears to be on Fena's side in the beginning, his true motives are later made clear where he uses Fena as a disposable pawn to find Kusanagi, one of Japan's legendary treasures rumored to be able to found a nation. All of the Goblin Warriors have disobeyed his directive to leave Fena, but this plot point has not been explained beyond Shitan possibly finding the sword in El Dorado. The enigmatic archer chose to stick with Yukimaru rather than obey the command to return home but his motives are still unclear.

As part of the previous mystery, Kei -- Shitan's older brother -- was built up as a possible antagonist with Yukihisa asking Kei if he could defeat Yukimaru in battle. Fena: Pirate Princess has given no word on Kei since, despite the fact that the Goblin Warriors disobeyed Yukihisa's direct order. Again, it could be possible Shitan is still secretly carrying out his mission and keeping Kei at bay, but it's strange that the series built up Yukimaru and Kei's confrontation so much if Kei has no further involvement.

Will Fena Solve the Remaining Lines From the "Vice Versa" Song?

The biggest mystery driving the central conflict is Fena's directive to find Eden. There haven't been many clues as to why she must go there, except for the legend that the Houtmans are linked to El Dorado. The song "Vice Versa" has laid a trail of breadcrumbs through Fena's memories, but there are still lines that have yet to be solved: "Far across the waves, the maid slumbers/Dark blue water, white storm clouds/What lies ahead is the sun setting in the east/Now is the time to run, beyond the ark." These lines have ties to the lingering mysteries the show has been carefully building up.

For the first one, Joan D'Arc has been established as a character who seems to have survived her supposed death at the stake. It's implied she may be related to Fena and could be the "maid that slumbers," as Fena saw her grave in the secret area with the stone. Is there a ritual to bring her back to life, or for her to reincarnate through her descendant? Fena is a king's daughter, which is seemingly important, so there could be a blood sacrifice coming up.

Weaving through all this is the choice Fena will have to make between blue water and storm clouds. This choice first comes to her in a dream, then from Cody -- who turns out to be someone called the Observer -- and again from the lines of "Vice Versa." It's written on Joan D'Arc's grave, but Fena: Pirate Princess hasn't revealed what this choice may entail -- though it seems integral to the entire plot. Perhaps it will be a choice of whether Fena stays in Eden or one involving Joan D'Arc.

Whatever the answers may be, Fena: Pirate Princess' finale will arrive soon and hopefully answer fans' biggest questions. There are possibilities for an even bigger twist as the anime delivers on the intrigue it has been setting up since Episode 1.
