The Kaguya-sama: Love is War anime will return for a third season in April 2022.
The new season was announced at the end of an all-new 10 minute episode of the popular romantic-comedy series, which was released directly to the Aniplex Youtube channel. The 10-minute episode is an adaptation of Chapter 110 of Aka Akasaka's original manga, which was originally published in 2018 to celebrate the announcement of the first season of the series' anime adaptation. The short episode centers on the student council, as they discuss their favorite manga and the anime adaptations that were created from them. The third season was originally announced shortly after the second season of the show concluded in 2020, but this announcement is the first confirmation of its premiere window. The third season will also carry a new subtitle, with the show now being titled Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Ultra Romantic.
In addition to the anime's impending return, the Kaguya-sama manga will also soon return from a hiatus to begin its final story arc.Kaguya-sama will resume serialization with Weekly Young Jump's 47th issue, which will be published on Oct. 21. The popular romantic comedy series entered hiatus in May so that creator Aka Akasaka could take time to write and plan out the series' finale.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War tells the story of the increasingly complicated relationship between Kaguya Shinomiya, the heir to one of Japan's richest families and the vice-president of her high school's student government; and Miyuki Shirogane, the school's working-class but over-achieving president. The two student body leaders are obviously in love with each other, but both are too proud to admit it. Rather than simply dating, the two engage in a series of increasingly convoluted mind-games designed to get the other one to confess their feelings first. The would-be-couple's complex mind games often drag in the other members of the school's student body, including the pessimistic otaku Yu Ishigami and the student council's bizarre but lovable treasurer, Chika Fujiwara.
Akasaka's story of courtship-meets-psychological warfare was first published in 2015. The manga was adapted into an anime series by Fairy Tail studio A-1 Pictures in 2019, which was followed up with a second season in 2020. Both seasons of the anime were directed by Shinichi Omata, who previously directed Rozen Maiden, The Record of Grancrest War and the acclaimed Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju.
The first two seasons of the anime are available for streaming on Funimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu. The manga has been localized into English and is distributed both digitally and in print by VIZ Media.
