The opening sequence for the upcoming Komi Can't Communicate anime has been released.
The beautifully animated intro was revealed on the official YouTube channel for Shogakukan-Shuiesha Productions, better known by its abbreviation "ShoPro," the animation studio that was behind anime series such as Ranma 1/2 and Mega Man NT Warrior. The studio is now producing the anime adaptation of Tomohito Oda's popular comedy/slice-of-life manga. The series' theme song is "Cinderella," performed by the Japanese rock group Cider Girl.
Komi Can't Communicate tells the story of Shoko Komi, an elegant young woman who is rarely seen talking to others. Komi is placed in the same class as Hitohito Tadano, a thoroughly average boy who prefers to keep his head down and not stick out from the crowd. While Komi develops a reputation for being hard to approach due to her intimidating beauty and aloof demeanor, Tadano discovers that she is actually very nice, but painfully shy and socially awkward. Despite not being particularly popular himself, Tadano decides to help Komi overcome her social anxieties and achieve her goal of making 100 friends.
The original manga for the series began its serialization in 2016 in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine. The series has been both a critical and commercial success, with the first collected volume achieving a circulation of more than 5 million copies, and critics praising the series for its often outlandish but still relatable humor. The manga has been officially localized into English and is distributed in North America by VIZ Media.
The anime series will premiere in Japan on Oct. 7, and will make its international debut exclusively on Netflix on Oct. 21. Unlike previous anime series released by Netflix, which usually waited until a whole season's worth of episodes were available before adding the title to its streaming service, Komi Can't Communicate will release new episodes on a weekly basis. The anime is directed by Doraemon and Space Brothers' Ayumu Watanabe and Yokai Watch's Kazuki Kawagoe. Voice actor Aoi Koga, who is best known for their role of Kaguya Shinomiya in Kaguya-sama: Love is War, will play Komi, while Black Clover's Gakuto Kajiwara will voice Tadano.
In addition to the new anime series, a live-action adaptation of the series is also currently airing in Japan. Japanese model and actress Elaiza Ikeda, who also appeared in the live-action adaptation of Kakegurui, plays Komi, while idol singer Masuda Takahisa portrays Tadano. The live-action series has not been licensed for international release at this time, though Netflix did stream the Kakegurui drama outside of Japan.
