The first 14 minutes have of the Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage - Zensho TAKE OFF movie can now be previewed for free.
The extended look at the new animated film was released on one of the distributor Bandai Namco's official YouTube channels. The new film is the third in a planned series of seven movies which will retell the saga that began with the 1974 anime movie Space Battleship Yamato. Yamato was created by manga author Leiji Matsumoto, movie producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, and director/screenwriter Eiichi Yamamoto. The movie is widely considered to be one of the most influential anime of all time, and would later go on to be a direct inspiration for other foundational works in the medium, including the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage - Zensho TAKE OFF is the first of two films that are based on the story of the 1979 movie, Space Battleship Yamato: New Voyage. The new movie is being directed by Kenji Yasuda, who sci-fi anime fans may recognize for their work on 2015's Macross Delta. The movie also features character designs from veteran manga artist and character designer Nobuteru Yuki, whose work was previously seen in shows such as The Vision of Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War and the anime adaptation of Ai Yazawa's Paradise Kiss. The movie will premiere in Japan on Oct. 8. As with the previous two movies in the remake series, advance Blu-ray copies of the film will be available for sale on the same date at theaters screening the movie. An international release for the movie has not been announced at this time, but the earlier movies in the series were streamed by Crunchyroll and Funimation in 2019.
The original Space Battleship Yamato told a story set in the year 2199, when the surface of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by the detonation of radioactive meteorite bombs that were dropped onto the planet by an alien race known as the Gamilas. Humanity is unable to fight back until they discover technology left behind by an ancient alien race. They retrofit their new discovery onto the remains of the sunken World War 2 battleship Yamato, transforming it into a powerful space cruiser. The series tells the story of the crew of this new spaceship, as they journey into deep space and behind enemy lines to retrieve a device that could potentially save humanity.
The first three movies in the series were re-edited and rewritten to create the TV series Star Blazers, which aired in the United States in 1979. Despite the changes to the original source material, Star Blazers is highly regarded as one of the first anime series to be broadcast in the West with a serialized story structure.
