Cowboy Bebop Poster Reveals a Glimpse of Spike’s Iconic Ship

A new poster has been released for the live-action Cowboy Bebop series.

The new poster showcases the show's central trio of Spike Spiegel (John Cho) Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir) and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) from behind as they stand in a run-down Martian town, ready for a shoot-out. Soaring above them is the instantly recognizable silhouette of Spike's personal fighter craft, the aerodynamically shaped Swordfish II. This poster features the first glimpse of the exterior of any spacecraft from Netflix's remake of the classic sci-fi anime, and it appears that the Swordfish has made the transition to live-action fairly faithfully. The live-action version of the Bebop, the larger spaceship that serves as the bounty hunters' home and base of operations, has yet to be seen.

Netflix will reveal more about the new show on Sept. 25, when it will reveal the series' new opening sequence. The show will feature new music from composer Yoko Kanno, who crafted the original 1998 series' iconic jazz and blues-influenced score, and has also created acclaimed soundtracks for countless other anime series, including Macross Frontier and The Vision of Escaflowne. In addition to Kanno's return, the new series also tapped the anime's original director, Shinichiro Watanabe, to serve as a creative consultant.

In a recent interview, the new series' showrunner André Nemec explained that the goal of the new show is to recreate the feeling of the original anime, not emulate it superficially. “We would look at sets, we would look at props, we would look at costumes, we would look at the edits, we would talk about all of these things, not to ape the anime,” Nemec said, “but to live in the spirit of the anime.” A first look at the series was revealed in August to a mixed reaction: while some fans appreciated the new take on the classic characters, others criticized some of the changes, or simply questioned the need for a live-action remake of the anime in the first place. In response to complaints about changes to Faye Valentine's revealing costume and her resemblance to the anime character, actor Daniella Pineda issued a suitably snarky reply that went viral following the show's initial reveal.

The live-action Cowboy Bebop will make its premiere on Nov. 19. The original anime is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
