WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 21 of Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun!, "The One Who Rules Over the Netherworld," now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Welcome to Demon School!'s Season 2 finale finds summer break drawing to a close as Iruma finishes the homework Kalego-sensei assigned the class. Sullivan takes this opportunity to spend the day with Iruma and have fun, and Iruma has a few lofty questions to ask along the way. Specifically, he wants to know more about the Demon King.

It's not yet clear who will become the next Demon King -- or if anyone will -- and Sullivan shows little interest in the position despite his qualifications. Some elements of the story suggest Iruma himself may claim that title instead, though Demon King Iruma would contract some of Welcome to Demon School!'s most heartfelt themes.
Sullivan reveals to Iruma that the previous King, named Derkila, had been a carefree but all-powerful being who didn't just rule the netherworld; he embodied it. His will could sway the entire realm's population with ease and make the impossible happen if he demanded it. Today's peaceful netherworld remains as his legacy, and Sullivan questions who might become the next king. Iruma also wonders this, but gives little thought to his own candidacy.
Evidence in Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun! suggests Iruma cannot become the Demon King, including his human status. Human beings are food, not citizens or politicians -- even if Iruma has been making friends in high places. His personality is also wrong for the position; he enjoys daily life with friends and has no serious ambitions. He unwittingly taught Alice to relax and forget ambition in exchange for happiness with friends, and during his date with Ameri, Iruma set an example as an easygoing person who doesn't overthink anything. Personality-wise, Alice and Ameri would make good rulers, but they went in the opposite direction and followed Iruma's example instead. This sets them apart from Sabnock, who does aspire to become Demon King.
However, other evidence in Iruma-Kun! suggests that despite all this, Iruma is destined to become Demon King after all. Iruma fits the ancient prophecy's description perfectly -- a being from another realm who bears the Ring of Solomon on his finger. He has no power as a demon, but he does have immense abilities with that ring, which allowed him to become the Walter Park battle's hero. Also, several scenes clearly depict Iruma as the new Demon King, seated on the throne in his evil form.
Iruma's evil side suggests future Demon King status not only in personality, but in appearance as well. Derkila's hair was a similar color as evil Iruma's, and personality-wise, Derkila likewise sought to create a happy and peaceful netherworld. They have the same vision of a perfect realm, potentially setting Iruma up to take over and create a smooth transition of power.
For now, Iruma thinks nothing of becoming Demon King but has already failed to live a quiet and invisible life in Babyls, becoming a powerful and popular student despite his intentions. It's possible that Iruma may take the next step and become Demon King in a similar fashion, or at least become a prime contender backed by his friends and admirers. Future seasons of Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun! may formally resolve the matter of royal succession, and no doubt Iruma Suzuki will be in the middle of it all.
