The Neon Genesis Evangelion Ultimate Edition Blu-ray set quickly sold out, but GKIDS has announced the Evangelion Standard and Collector's Edition Blu-ray sets, which are now available for preorder.
The Neon Genesis Evangelion Collector's Edition contains many of the same features as the Ultimate Edition. The 11 discs in the set feature all 26 episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime, as well as the movies EVANGELION:DEATH (TRUE)2 and The End of Evangelion. The release includes the Netflix, ADV Films and Manga Entertainment English dubs and subtitle tracks, in addition to over five hours of bonus features and eight art cards of the series' characters. Whereas the Ultimate Edition came with a 156-page book, the Collector's Edition comes with a 40-page book featuring excerpts from the Ultimate Edition's book. Shipping December 8, the Collector's Edition has an MSRP of $219.99, though the SHOUT! Factory and RightStuf online stores are selling it at a discounted price of $174.98.
The Standard Edition of Blu-ray set of Neon Genesis Evangelion comes out earlier than the Collector's Edition, shipping on November 9. This release contains all of the on-disc special features as the Collector's Edition with one major exception: it does not include the ADV Films dub and subtitle tracks for the original TV series, nor does it include Manga Entertainment's dub and subtitle tracks for EVANGELION:DEATH (TRUE)2 and The End of Evangelion. Only the Netflix dub and subs, deemed the "official" versions, are included. It does not come with any booklets or art cards. The Neon Genesis Evangelion Standard Edition Blu-Ray set has an MSRP of $59.58 and can be preordered for $47.98 from SHOUT! Factory and for $45.99 from RightStuf.
Digital download-to-own purchase options for Neon Genesis Evangelion and the EVANGELION:DEATH (TRUE)2 and The End of Evangelion movies will be available starting on November 2. Digital purchases will not include the five-plus hours of special features available on the Blu-Ray releases and will only include the "official" Netflix dub and subtitle tracks. None of GKIDS' Blu-ray or Digital editions will be able to include the series' original ending theme, "Fly Me to the Moon."
Created by Hideaki Anno, Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most influential and critically acclaimed anime series of all time. Originally premiering in 1995, the series is set in the year 2015 when Angels attack the city of Tokyo-3, and only a select group of troubled teenagers piloting the mechs known as Evangelions have a chance of preventing the apocalyptic event known as the Third Impact. The original series and movies are available for streaming on Netflix, while the four-part Rebuild of Evangelion movie reboot is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
