A new trailer for My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission sees the series looking back at the past before showcasing some of its new characters and action.
The clip begins with series hero Deku recounting his journey as superhero so far, beginning with his first encounters with the former top pro-hero All Might, to his recent internship under the powerful Endeavor. The clip also focuses on Rody Soul, a new character in the MHA franchise who makes his debut in World Heroes' Mission. The trailer is set to the new movie's theme song, "Empathy," by the band Asian Kung-Fu Generation, who anime fans may be most familiar with for their classic Naruto theme song, "Harukakanata." The trailer also features a few brief clips of the movie's action scenes, which show off Bakugo and Todoroki in their new costumes.
My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission opened in Japan at the beginning of August to the best box-office performance in the franchise's history. The movie sees Deku being framed for mass-murder, and he subsequently has to go on the run from the law, with help from his classmates and fellow Endeavor interns, Bakugo and Todoroki. The group recruits a team of international heroes from around the world to clear Deku's name and to stop the plans of the cult Humanity, who want to put an end to the use of superpower-granting Quirks forever.
The movie is directed by Kenji Nagasaki, who has directed every season as of the My Hero Academia anime series, as well as the previous two movies in the series. While the movie tells an original storyline, its script was supervised by series creator Kohei Horikoshi. Studio BONES, also known for their work on other anime franchises such as Eureka Seven and Fullmetal Alchemist, handled animation production on the film.
My Hero Academia was originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2014. The original manga was inspired by Horikoshi's love of American superhero comics, such as Spider-Man and Batman, along with influences from Japanese series such as Naruto and Kamen Rider. The series was adapted into a televised anime in 2016, which is currently on its fifth season. The manga now has a circulation of over 50 million copies worldwide, and has expanded with several spinoff series. Legendary Pictures is currently producing an American live-action remake of the series.
Past seasons of My Hero Academia are available for streaming on Netflix and Hulu. The entire series, including simulcasts of the current season, are available on both Funimation and Crunchyroll. An international release date for World Heroes' Mission has yet to be announced.
