WARNING: The following contains spoilers for To Your Eternity Episode 16, “The Children's Dreams,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Since the battle with the Nokkers in Episode 15 of To Your Eternity, Fushi has grown closer with Tonari and her friends. As he talks to them, he soon realizes these are just kids who want to finally leave the island and lead their own lives -- and he wants to help them fulfill that.
But first, Fushi has to get through one more round in the tournament. Although he may be immortal, he isn't invincible, and the battle tests him both physically and emotionally in the wake of Parona's death.
Fushi tells Tonari and her friends about his powers and the Creator, thoroughly fascinating the children. When asked what his dream is, Fushi is a little startled. He hasn't thought of anything past defeating the Nokkers by himself. Tonari, meanwhile, dreams of surprising her father.
When Tonari was a child, she had always wanted to become a writer and make her father happy. However, their lives were upended when he was convicted for her mother's mysterious death. Tonari, convinced of his innocence, chooses to go with him to Jananda Island. He decides to compete in the tournament to give them the chance to finally leave the island, but Tonari knows the event is really designed to satisfy people's lust for violence and murder. When she sees how bloodthirsty he looks as he stands on top of the people he killed, she doesn't see her father anymore -- she sees a killer.
Tonari crawls into the pit where all the corpses are deposited and starts her slow search for her father's body, hoping to find something that she knows won't be there. She'd rather her father dead than be a murderer. Tonari returns to the boat where they were supposed to meet and picks up a notebook her father left for her. In it, he apologizes to her but dies of poisoning soon after. She watches as a group of men toss her father's body into the ocean, walks away and starts flipping through the pages, determined to take life into her own hands and write her story.
As To Your Eternity continues, Tonari apologizes to Fushi for bringing him here. She hadn't meant to but Hayase, her face hidden, had convinced her to put him on the ship with the promise that Fushi would change her fate. How could she say no to that?
Fushi enters the final stage of the tournament against Hayase, promising Tonari he'll win and take everyone off the island. He hardly recognizes Hayase at first, but her taunting about how she had given March freedom by killing her infuriates him. He charges at her, transforming into Oniguma. Despite how much bigger he is than Hayase, he still finds himself at a severe disadvantage and his eye gets gouged out by her pole.
Parona is Fushi's next transformation, but this only brings on more taunts from Hayase, who asks if he enjoys her "gift" as if she killed Parona for him. Before arriving at Jananda, Hayase had slaughtered the rest of the villagers of Ninannah, leaving Parona as the only one left. Hayase claims didn't know exactly how to kill Parona but decided on going for her face. It proved to be much more difficult than she anticipated, so she was forced to decapitate her. Hayase's voice takes on a pseudo-pitying note as she remarks that Parona had to suffer more because Hayase hadn't been able to kill her in one strike.
Enraged, Fushi yells that he's going to kill Hayase. He launches himself at her, doing everything he can to defeat her. Everyone in the arena is delighted to see Fushi actually try to kill his opponent but Tonari and her friends are frozen in horror: this isn't the Fushi they know. His rage clouds his thoughts, leaving him wide open for Hayase to knock him out with the western morning glory. To Your Eternity seems determined to keep poor Fushi suffering as Hayase's bloodlust is put on full display.
