WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 58 of Digimon Adventure 2020, "Hikari, New Life," now streaming on Crunchyroll.
From almost the very start, the Holy Digimon have been at the center of Digimon Adventure 2020's new canon, though it took a considerable amount of time for any to be properly introduced. After T.K and Patomon eventually entered the picture, Hikari/Kari and Tailmon/Gatomon came along soon after, and the Holy Digimon have since evolved into more and more powerful, angelic forms -- culminating in Holydramon and Goddramon in the battle against Milleniumon.
But Episode 58, "Hikari, New Life," hints that the pair aren't done growing just yet. Much like Agumon and Gabumon's branching evolutionary trees, the latest Digimon installment teases an alternate Mega form for Angewomon: Ophanimon.
The episode sees Hikari, T.K and Tai returning to the forest they met Petaldramon in. The Legendary Digimon's body, entombed by plantlife, still looms over the woodland area, which the trio discover has now become a nursery for Digitama, or Digi-Eggs. However, while most of the eggs are warm and wiggling around the place, as Digitama are one to do, a few are much greyer and colder, indicating that they won't hatch into their Baby forms. The cause is a giant, life-draining beast called SkullBaluchimon, an Undead Digimon who also has a host of Soulmon at its command. (As fans will remember from SkullGreymon in the original Adventure series, 'Skull' forms are essentially zombified versions of existing Digimon -- in this case, Baluchimon.)
While Tai, Greymon, T.K and Patomon try to defend the remaining eggs from falling prey to the rot festering in the woods, Hikari and Angewomon attempt to take care of the problem at its root. Despite being on equal footing as an Ultimate Digimon, Angewomon's divine energy is no match for the lumbering creature, who instills a paralyzing fear in her. Naturally, Hikari's Crest being that of Light, the Chosen One's pledge to defend life in the forest eventually burns strong enough to revitalize her fallen ally. In the process, and in a similar manner to MetalGreymon's quasi-jump to WarGreymon against DemiDevimon, Angewomon is able to channel some of her Mega form's power (Ophanimon) without completing a full transformation, with visual confirmation of the source silhouetted behind her in rainbow light.
Ophanimon isn't just a Holy Digmon, it's a Celestial one, meaning that just a fraction of its energy is enough to smite SkullBaluchimon's darkness from the forest for good. Based on the archangel Raphael, Ophanimon is Angewomon's true final form, teased all the way back in Episode 4 of Digimon Adventure 2020 in the Holy Digimon temple that Tai and Sora visited. This full-circle moment indicates that the series is indeed starting to enter its final stages, but we'll clearly have to wait a little longer until the 10-winged warrior makes her proper debut.
