As July 2021 enters the homestretch, this past week has seen Electronic Arts unveil its next major wave of video games for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the EA Play Live 2021 showcase. And with Comic-Con@Home just warming up, plenty of television and film projects have begun to ramp up their own marketing, including the latest movies and shows coming to Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix and Paramount+.
Here are all the biggest trailers, teasers and promos from this week for television, film and video games.
Apex Legends
The popular online game Apex Legends is unveiling its tenth season of content, Apex Legends: Emergence, set to launch next month. The latest Legend Seer is showcased in the game's new trailer, showing off his deadly skills by dispatching his opponents with lethal efficiency while details about his backstory come to light.
Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, Apex Legends is for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Apex Legends: Emergence launches Aug. 3.
Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life
Disney's adorable pair of mischievous chipmunks Chip 'n' Dale return to star together in a new Disney+ animated series Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life this month. As the chipmunk best friends adjust to living in a park within the big city, they encounter other iconic Disney animated characters along the way, with all sorts of hilarious hijinks sure to ensue.
Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life will stream on Disney+ beginning July 28. The Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers movie is slated to reach the streaming service in Spring 2022.
Clickbait
The murderous side of social media is explored in the upcoming Netflix miniseries Clickbait, with Adrian Grenier portraying a man named Nick Brewer. Nick is a family man who is abused and finds himself publicly accused of being an abusive figure. As Nick's case goes viral, his innocence is questioned while the possibility of his murder ratchets up with every click.
Created by Tony Ayres and Christian White, Clickbait stars Zoe Kazan, Betty Gabriel and Adrian Grenier. The miniseries premieres Aug. 25 on Netflix.
Dead Space
One of the most acclaimed survival horror video games is the science fiction title Dead Space, first released in 2008. Spawning an entire franchise of new games and more, the original Dead Space is getting an enhanced remake for modern consoles, with a teaser trailer hinting at a return to the nightmarish adventure as Isaac Clarke faces the horrors lurking deep within outer space.
Developed by Motive Studios and published by Electronic Arts, the Dead Space remake will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. No release date has currently been announced.
Demonic
Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is returning with Demonic, his first feature film since 2015's science fiction flick Chappie. Shifting gears to supernatural horror, the latest trailer for Demonic has a woman dropped into a nightmarish world, where she is hunted by a voracious monster while catching glimpses of heavily-armed, demon-hunting priests.
Written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, Demonic stars Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, Michael J. Rogers, Nathalie Bolt and Terry Chen. The film will be released in theaters on Aug. 20 and on VOD Aug. 27.
Dune
After enduring several pandemic-related delays, acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's eagerly anticipated adaptation of Dune is poised to open in theaters this October. Exploring the planet Arrakis, protagonist Paul Atreides seeks to stop the violence consuming the world for its valuable stores of spice while encountering a local woman named Chani who changes his life.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Dune stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Stephen Henderson and Josh Brolin. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Oct. 22.
Fena: Pirate Princess
Toonami and Crunchyroll are teaming up for the new anime series Fena: Pirate Princess, with its eponymous protagonist living on the high seas for a decade after barely surviving a harrowing shipwreck as a child. Teasing plenty of bloody action amongst competing pirates, the upcoming series will show Fena leading her crew as they encounter deadly peril across the seven seas.
Directed by Kazuto Nakazawa, Fena: Pirate Princess premieres on Adult Swim Aug. 14, with a Crunchyroll release the following day.
Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut
One of the biggest hits released late in the PlayStation 4's life cycle was the historical epic Ghost of Tsushima, and the game is being remastered and expanded for the PlayStation 5 with next month's Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut. Featuring the addition of new story content, including a new setting and adversary for protagonist Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima is poised to come back bigger and better this August.
Developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut will be released for PlayStation 5 on Aug. 20.
Heels
After starring on Arrow for eight seasons, actor Stephen Amell's next television series has him take the action to the wrestling ring in the upcoming drama Heels. The show's latest trailer reveals Amell as professional wrestler Jack Spade, confronting his own inner demons as well as his tense relationship with his brother, a rival wrestler, head-on.
Written by Michael Waldron, Heels stars Stephen Amell, Alison Luff, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Bauer, Allen Maldonado, James Harrison Jr., Mary McCormack, David James Elliott and Joel Murray. The series premieres on Starz on Aug. 15.
Jackass Forever
With the Jackass franchise over twenty years old since its original premiere on MTV in 2000, the first theatrical trailer for the franchise's fourth film, aptly titled Jackass Forever, treads heavily on nostalgia. Incorporating clips from previous films, the trailer reveals the Jackass crew older but none the wiser, as they continue to punish themselves with increasingly ludicrous stunts.
Directed by Jeff Tremaine, Jackass Forever stars Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Ehren McGheney and Preston Lacy. The films opens in theaters on Oct. 22.
The Last Duel
Groundbreaking filmmaker Ridley Scott has assembled an all-star cast for his latest historical epic film The Last Duel. Set in 14th century France as the country battles England during the Hundred Years War, a French knight and his longtime squire face each other in mortal combat when the knight's wife accuses the squire of assaulting her, leading to a grueling showdown.
Directed by Ridley Scott, The Last Duel stars Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck. The film opens in theaters Oct. 15.
Lost Judgment
Sega's popular Yakuza video game franchise gets a spinoff game this September with Lost Judgment. Whereas the main series' latest title Yakuza: Like a Dragon shifted towards turn-based RPG gameplay, Lost Judgment is a return to the beat 'em up gameplay style that defined the franchise's earlier installments as a private detective delves into Japan's criminal underworld.
Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega, Lost Judgement will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Sept. 24, 2021.
Malignant
While fan-favorite filmmaker James Wan may be currently hard at work on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wan's preceding project brings him back to his roots as a horror movie director. The first trailer for the upcoming film Malignant has a woman suffer from a nightmares of gruesome murders, only to learn the killings are taking place in the real world as she confronts a paranormal entity that has haunted her all her life.
Directed, produced and co-written by James Wan, Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson and George Young. The film opens in theaters and arrives on HBO Max Sept. 10.
My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission
The third anime film in the enormously popular My Hero Academia franchise is set to premiere in Japan next month, tying in with the events of the anime series' current season. As aspiring superhero Deku Midoriya begins to master his newly discovered powers, he is framed for a horrifying incident by a murderous cult, with his friends and classmates scrambling to clear his name.
Directed by Kenji Nagasaki, My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission will premiere in Japan on Aug. 6.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins
It's been eight years since the G.I. Joe franchise has been on the big screen and the action-packed cinematic universe is rebooted with the new solo spinoff film Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The final trailer for the film shows Henry Golding's eponymous ninja suiting up as familiar faces, including his iconic frenemy Storm Shadow, appear while Snake Eyes trains to claim his martial arts destiny in Japan.
Directed by Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Takehiro Hira as Kenta, Iko Uwais as Hard Master and Peter Mensah as Blind Master. The film is now in theaters.
Star Trek: Lower Decks
The crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is back for a new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, with the hit animated series facing off against everything from a marauding crew of Ferengi to a vaguely malevolent computer that has gained sentience. With Ensign Bradley Boimler back with his old friends, the wackier side of the Star Trek Universe is about to be explored in full.
Streaming on Paramount+, Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome, Eugene Cordero, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell and Gillian Vigman. Season 2 premieres Aug. 12.
Star Trek: Prodigy
The next Star Trek animated series Star Trek: Prodigy blasts the iconic franchise into the legacy of Starfleet as six misfits find themselves taking the helm of an unfamiliar starship while exploring the cosmos. Joined by a hologram program of fan-favorite Starfleet officer Admiral Kathryn Janeway, the unlikely crew comes together to boldly take the franchise where no show has gone before.
Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy premieres this fall on Paramount+. The series stars Kate Mulgrew, Rylee Alazraqui, Brett Gray, Angus Imrie, Jason Mantzoukas, Ella Purnell and Dee Bradley Baker.
Vacation Friends
John Cena may be one of the most admired professional wrestlers in the WWE but, in the upcoming comedy Vacation Friends, Cena gets to embrace his raunchier side. As a respectable couple enjoy a vacation in Mexico, they befriend a wild couple that decides to crash their wedding back home months later, with Cena's lewd Ron ready to keep the party going.
Directed and co-written by Clay Tarver, Vacation Friends stars John Cena, Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji and Meredith Hagner. The film premieres Aug. 27 on Hulu, with the film released on Disney+ the same date in select international territories.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
Geralt isn't the only Witcher, with the backstory behind the stoic, fantasy protagonist's mentor Vesemir revealed in the upcoming animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. A teaser trailer showcases Vesemir in his prime, hunting monsters and reaping the benefits that befits his status as a Witcher with decadent aplomb.
Directed by Han Kwang II, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf stars Theo James, Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish and Mary McDonnell. The film premieres Aug. 23 on Netflix.
