Misfit of Demon King Academy Manga’s Kayaharuka Has Passed Away

Just days after announcing the cancellation of The Misfit of Demon King Academy manga, publisher Square Enix has confirmed that manga artist Kayaharuka has passed away.

As reported by Anime News Network, Square Enix has confirmed that Kayaharuka, the artist behind the manga adaptation of The Misfit of Demon King Academy, passed away on July 6. While the announcement does not specify a cause of death, Square Enix's earlier statement on the cancellation of the manga revealed that Kayaharuka was receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer. The previous statement was released after the artist had already passed away.

The Misfit of Demon King Academy manga was an adaptation of a light novel series written by Shu. The manga was originally published by Square Enix on its Manga Up! online manga service. The first three volumes of the manga were localized in English and released in print, with a fourth volume still scheduled to be released in 2022. The series was also adapted into an anime by Restaurant to Another World studio Silver Link in 2020. A second season of the anime has been announced.

Kayaharuka's family has already held a funeral for the artist. When it was announced that the manga was being canceled, Kayaharuka expressed their regret over the circumstances that brought the series to an end, and they stated they treasured the time they spent working on it.
