A new trailer for Macross Delta: Zettai Live!!!!!! has been released, which includes a teaser for the Macross Frontier film short, The Labyrinth of Time.
As reported by Anime News Network, the new trailer for Macross Delta: Zettai Live!!!!!! premiered during the "#Air Walküre/Macross F o Issho ni Miyō!!!!!!!" promotional event that was livestreamed in Japan on July 4. Unlike several prior Macross films, such as 1984's Macross: Do You Remember Love and the two Macross Frontier movies, which were retellings/re-imaginings of the TV series' storylines, Zettai Live!!!!!! will present an all-new sequel story that picks up after the conclusion of the Macross Delta anime. The trailer features a brand new song, "Glow In the Dark," and appears to feature a new model of the series' trademark Valkyrie transforming fighters. Series creator Shoji Kawamori has teased that the six exclamation points in the title provide a hint at Zettai Live!!!!!!'s story: the first five exclamation points represent the five members of Delta's Walkure pop group, and the sixth exclamation point represents a new character who will be introduced in the movie.
Macross Delta debuted in 2016 and tells the story of Hayate Immelman, a naturally gifted pilot who gets pulled into the conflict between the space-faring New United Nations government and the Kingdom of Windermere, which distrusts humanity because of a past tragedy. Immelman joins the Delta Flight mercenary group, which is tasked with protecting Walkure, a five-member pop group whose songs seem to be the only cure for the Var Syndrome, a disease that causes the infected to lose control of their bodies and go berserk.
The release of Zettai Live!!!!!! will also coincide with the release of a new theatrical short, entitled Macross Frontier Film Short: Labyrinth of Time. Few details about the short have been released, but the teaser image included in the trailer depicts Macross Frontier's two songstresses, Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee. Macross Frontier was released in 2008 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the debut of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross. The series featured music by Cowboy Bebop composer Yoko Kanno and was a massive success, spawning two movie adaptations, a line of video games, and spurred a new boom of popularity for anime music soundtracks in Japan.
While a release outside of Japan for Macross Delta: Zettai Live!!!!!! and Macross Frontier Film Short: Labyrinth of Time has not been announced, a recent deal between the Japanese rights holders of Macross and Harmony Gold, who owns the rights to the Robotech franchise, has cleared the way for Macross products to finally be released internationally. Prior to this deal, a legal battle over the IP rights to Robotech, which was partially created from re-edited and rewritten parts of the original Macross anime, prevented the release of any Macross media or products outside of Japan.
