We are all very familiar with the beats that define DJing and most of us have at least one song that we consider to be the best electronic music mix of all time. This is an honour for us because it means that we are indeed on a top of the dance foodchain. But what about the rest? What are the top 3 best songs that a DJ should play in a mix? Let us find out by exploring the best electronic music of each year!
2021 brought back the ‘greatest collab’ between Rihanna and Kanye West and the song showcased one of the best Rihanna songs ever! ‘Famous’, off of her album ‘orious’, was a massive hit and many would even predict the throne of this particular track going to Rihanna, but then again, with ‘olves’ coming so close, it was Elton John that did it! The beat that dominates most of the song is a simple but effective beat that has now made its way onto the EDM mix, which in itself is quite a feat. The beat sets the mood for what follows and Rihanna proves that she can still deliver big even without the vocals.
Another huge hit was ‘Slow Genie’, from the wonderful album ‘otropic’. This track was probably the funkiest song we heard this year and it featured a crazy futuristic beat that was unmistakably hip-hop. This one is definitely a keeper, as it’s so different from the other slow electronic dance music mixes that we’ve heard this year. It just had a unique quality that no other song managed to match.
Above all else, we have ‘Touch’, from Koolhaas’ wonderful ‘EDM mix’. This was an absolute club set opener for many of us and just had to include this track on our list. It starts with a heavy drum beat that quickly leads into some really high octane bangers. One of the best things about this track is when it goes into a break where Rihanna screams like a maniac and kicks her feet up and down the dancefloor like there’s no tomorrow. A real ear worm and an essential earner.
We also had the brilliant and talented Eddy B and ‘Higgs Bosons’ from Disclosure, one of the newest and most talked about tracks from their album. Again, we have an incredible guitar lead part that breaks almost instantly, but the real star here is Tyga. He holds the beat with what could only be described as total confidence, setting the pace for what could become a massive single. This electronic dance music mix should have been played on our radio earlier, but we simply had to put it on here first.
Another track that really caught our attention was ‘Chunky’ from Disclosure. This is another massive hit from Disclosure with equal panache. The massive drum beat, the kick drum, the snares, everything just melts onto the floor. One of the biggest hits from Disclosure so far. One of those songs that will go down in history.
Finally, but not by much, but still a worthy mention is ‘Wake Me Up’. One of Disclosure’s very best songs, which came out at number 11 in the charts. This massive beat is full of energy and you just know it’s going to be huge seconds before it ends. The electronic sounds are top notch, the lyrics are catchy, the beat is massive. This is an essential track for anyone who loves electronic music and especially if you love it hard.
These are just some of the highlights we got to see this year. We were spoiled for choice, but sadly there was nothing we could not find, which disappointed us slightly. But overall it was a great show to watch and some of the best electronic music we’ve heard this year. Hopefully next year there will be more to announce, but until then we’ll have to settle for what we saw and that was some of the best EDM of the year.
