A part of what makes Avatar: The Legend of Korra such an exciting adventure saga is the passionate relationships which blossom between characters. While the series initially teases Korra falling for her friend Mako, the relationship that truly deepens is her strong connection to Asami. The two badass women are incredibly well matched, and their romance serves as the series’ most compelling pairing.
Korra and Asami start off as rivals, become best friends and eventually their feelings blossom into love. By the end of The Legend of Korra, the two venture into the Spirit World together, hand in hand. While the animated series never made their amorous relationship overly explicit, co-creators confirmed that "Korrasami is canon" and extended chapters in the comics prove that the two are the OTP. Among many, here are five reasons Korra and Asami are The Legend of Korra’s strongest couple.
Korra and Asami Expertly Communicate With Each Other
Back when Korra and Asami were both after Mako, there was a lot of love-triangle drama between them, deterring a lot of essential connection and communication. With deep feelings left unsaid, their friendship struggled to take off. However, after they came clean about their Mako problems and discussed how immature their early feud was, they ditched the drama and learned how to express themselves and connect.
When Korra's poisoned at the end of The Legend of Korra Season 3, she detached herself from her life in Republic City and distanced herself from her friends, but she wrote to only Asami. These written correspondence during such difficult times showed how much they cared for each other and how vulnerable they were. This also strengthened their ability to communicate with each other for life. Korra’s willingness to open up to Asami was because of how well they understood each other, allowing them to have imperative heart-to-hearts, thus solidifying their passionate bond.
Korra and Asami Were Badass Fighters and Friends
Though Korra was initially judgmental over Asami’s rich girl fashion and attitude, the sporty Avatar’s opinion changed when Asami took her racing. Korra’s eyes opened up to Asami’s badass side, as the non-bender knew how to fight and was a genius mechanic. The thrill-seeking women admired each other’s power, and neither were a liability on the battlefield. Korra even trained with Asami to up her hand-to-hand combat.
Even when the two were outnumbered, they’re unstoppable, able to deftly take on a large group of bandits trying to rob them. Korra may be the Avatar with all four elements at her disposal, but Asami took self-defense classes all her life, and she was a force to be reckoned with when using an electroshock weapon. Additionally, when Korra was captured, her abductors failed to secure Asami, who saved the day thanks to her quick thinking and mechanic skills. When they're together, Korrasami could face anything.
Asami Supported Korra At Her Lowest Moments
Even when their relationship was rocky, Asami didn't hesitate to lift Korra up. Air bending wasn't easy for Korra, and her impatience gave her uncertainties about her role as the Avatar. However, when Korra’s confidence faltered, Asami was the first to speak up about how amazing she was. Korra battled with her insecurity constantly, but Asami never doubted her, always reinvigorating her spirit.
After years apart, their touching reunion in Season 4 was the perfect medicine Korra needed to get her head in the game. Mind always stirring with troubling thoughts, Korra told Asami about how Toph believed the world didn't need her and how pointless it was to stop Kuvira. In response, Asami assured Korra that Toph was wrong and that the world needed Korra.
Korra and Asami Always Had Each Other's Backs
Both Korra and Asami wanted each other to be happy, so they gravitated toward each other when they were in pain. The mercury poison Zaheer used on Korra left her body weak, and Asami stayed by her side to help her recuperate from her injuries. When Korra decided to leave for the Southern Water Tribe, Asami even offered to go with her. Though Korra turned her down, she still relied on the loving letters she sent.
While Asami was constantly there for her friend in need, Korra came through for Asami too. When Asami’s father betrayed her in Season 1 and died in Season 4, Korra was there to comfort her – even if she resented Asami's father. Thankful for Asami’s unwavering support, Korra wanted Asami to be happy, jubilantly taking her on a vacation to the Spirit World when she mentioned wanting to simmer down after the finale battle.
Korrasami Was Slow-Burn Done Right
Korra and Asami did not share a kiss or confession in the animated series, but that didn't mean they weren't meant to be. The only reason they weren’t close from the start was because of Mako, and when those relationships dissolved, Korra and Asami decided to be friends. From then on, the time they spent together slowly but steadily advanced their affections, and hints of their romantic feelings especially showed up in the final season. For example, Korra blushed when Asami complimented her hair before commenting how Asami always looked snazzy. From there, the two truly only had eyes for each other, and by the time they went on a Spirit World vacation, it was obvious their friendship had flourished into something deeper.
Korra and Asami’s love story may have started out as a slow-burn, but during their Spirit World venture they verbally expressed their romantic feelings for one another and became attached at the hip as life partners. Extended chapters from The Legend of Korra comic unveiled their first kiss and detailed how their relationship progressed as they came out to their friends and faced new obstacles. Though antagonistic forces tried to tear them apart, they overcame everything thrown their way, ending their story with a beautiful "I love you" confessions.
