Magia Record began life in 2017 as a role-playing game spinoff of the popular and critically-acclaimed anime, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Hitting big on mobile phone platforms, the game's story was eventually adapted into both manga and anime. That anime is finally getting a second season, further expanding on the enduringly popular franchise.
Magia Record finally has a release date for its second season, which will build off of the earth-shattering revelations of the show's initial entry. Here's everything fans should know about the show before it debuts this summer.
Magia Record's Plot
The series is set in the city of Kamihama, which is where the franchise's many magical girls congregate. The protagonist is a young girl named Iroha Tamaki, who comes to the city in order to find her sister Ui. Along the way, she encounters characters from the main anime series like Homura Akemi and the fiendish Kyubey.
The plot will pick up where the first season left off after the magical girls learn that they are meant to become witches. However, certain characters, like Iroha have learned how to reverse the witch transformation, though Kyubey fears that trying to reverse the transformations will have a disastrous societal effect. All this sets the stage for the series to enter new territory as it pulls from the still-ongoing manga series. The witches themselves will likely be the main antagonists going forward.
Magia Record's Season 2 Trailer
The second season was announced back at the end of the first, with a teaser trailer subsequently being released to hype up the continuation. This trailer essentially gave a synopsis of the first season's events, talking about the forced witch transformations and other plot elements. Unfortunately, this has been the only footage released for the new season until a recent poster was revealed, which means there's still very little out about the second season.
News to Know About Magia Record Season 2
The series will still be produced by the studio Shaft, who worked the original Madoka Magica, the franchise's multiple film adaptations and other shows like Nisekoi. The staff from the first season will remain on this one, hopefully meaning the same level of quality can be maintained.
Gekidan Inu Curry directs the series and oversees the scripts, with Madoka Magica director Yukihiro Miyamoto assisting in directing to maintain franchise consistency. The animation will also be handled by series stalwarts such as Akiyuki Simbo, Junichiro Taniguchi and Hiroki Yamamura.
The voice cast, on the other hand, consists of Momom Asakura as Iroha Tamaki, Sora Amamiya as Yahichyo Nanami, Shina Natsukawa as Yui Tsuruno, Ayane Sakura as Felicia Mitsuki, Yui Ogura as Sana Futaba and Mikako Komatsu as Momoka Togame. Kaede Akino, Rena Minami and Small Kyubey are other roles planned for the series, but it's not been announced yet who will voice them.
Magia Record Season 2's Release Date
The wait for the anime's continuation has definitely been grueling for fans of the franchise, who've had to wait since early last year. Thankfully, a somewhat definitive release date has finally been given, though this is only for the Japanese version. The show's most recent poster revealed that Season 2 will hit Japan this summer. Given that it's already June, this tentative summer release date more than likely translates into a July 2021 premiere.
It's unknown when the English version will be available, though Crunchyroll and Funimation brought the first season to international audiences fairly quickly. Hopefully, for those itching for more magical girl goodness, the same will happen with the second bewitching season.
