The fourth and final season of Castlevania wraps up Trevor Belmont's story in an epic fashion, with the vampire hunter battling for the fate of humanity against the forces of darkness. And while Trevor manages to secure a hard-fought happy ending and survive the final battle, his survival was not always planned.
In an exclusive interview with CBR, series executive producer Kevin Kolde revealed that as production was underway on Season 4, the producers and animators were unsure if Trevor would survive until they received the last two scripts from series creator Warren Ellis.
"There was a question, up until the last two scripts came in, as to how Trevor’s story would end and how the story would end with Dracula and Lisa. In the outline, it was unclear as Warren was going through writing Season 4 episodes," Kolde tells CBR. "Those particular decisions came down to when he wrote those scripts in the moment, it could’ve went a couple ways. I’m thrilled with what he ultimately chose to do and chose to handle it. But I think there was consideration as to whether Trevor would make it out of the series but I’m glad that he did."
In the series' final two episodes, the true antagonist is revealed to be the personification of Death, orchestrating events to resurrect Dracula and manipulate him into harvesting more souls to feast on. Trevor prepares to sacrifice his life to defeat the elemental force, revealed to have narrowly survived as he regroups with his companions weeks later. And while Trevor's adventures have come to an end following Death's defeat, Kolde has hinted there are plans to continue the animated Castlevania franchise with a new cast of characters currently underway in a new series set in the same universe.

All four seasons are available to stream on Netflix.
