Boruto: Kawaki’s New Purpose Is Tragically Romantic (and Scary)

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Chapter 57, “Eida,” of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto, Mari Morimoto and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

Kawaki's purpose has been altered significantly in the Boruto manga. With Isshiki dead and his Karma mark gone, he's no longer meant to be an Ōtsutsuki vessel. This massive shift has led to the teen being solely focused on helping Boruto remove his own cursed mark, as he wants to protect his adoptive brother.

However, when the killer robot is Eida introduced as Code's new partner in Chapter #57, Kawaki forcibly gains a new purpose all over again -- one that's both tragically romantic and downright scary.

As Code recruits Eida at Boro's base, he discovers she has the power to make everyone nearby fall in love with her. She captivates others' hearts to the point that they can't harm her, but while Code states how cool the gift is, Eida reveals it's also a curse. She actually hates Amado for helping engineer her like that because it means no one will fall in love with her organically.

She's a hopeless romantic who, at the end of the day, would like to find true love, but sadly, Amado, Kara and Isshiki have taken this away from her. The catch is the only people who won't fall under her gaze are her family, which she hints she has none of, as well as those with Ōtsutsuki DNA. It's why Isshiki had Boro try to dispose of her, as she couldn't entrance him. Interestingly, seeing as Kawaki and Boruto (thanks to Momoshiki's possession) have Ōtsutsuki genes in their blood, two potential suitors are presented in the latest chapter of the manga.

As a result, Eida decides to help Code because doing so will allow her to find her "prince." With her all-seeing mind, she's been following Boruto all his life but as cute as he is, she doesn't mind Code using him as the sacrifice to the Ten-Tails in order to carry out Isshiki's plan of conquering the world. She's far more enamored by Kawaki's emo attitude -- the same way Sakura was fascinated by Sasuke in the past. She also loves that Kawaki helped kill Isshiki, an oppressor in her eyes.

So, Eida agrees to kill off his Konoha family and pursue a vulnerable Kawaki, seeing him as her one shot at a free romance. It's pretty warped. Kawaki won't warm to anyone who hurts his loved ones, but Eida also hints that apart from her powers of automatic love, she's got more hidden tricks up her sleeve to make this mission successful.

The revelation leaves Code intrigued and ready to help because together, he knows they'll be able to get the job done. If the price for her expertise is Kawaki, knowing how powerful she is, Code recognizes that it's best for Eida to ultimately get what she wants.
