Avatar: The Last Airbender Creator Draws Korra for New Graphic Novel

Brian Konietzko, one of the co-creators Avatar: The Last Airbender, recently shared some exciting work in progress on Instagram. The sketch in question depicts Korra, the Avatar of the sequel series The Legend of Korra, clad in winter wear.

In the original Instagram post, Konietzko let slip that he's working on the image for the cover of an upcoming release from Dark Horse Comics, which caused some speculation among fans of the classic anime series. Korra's attire hints at one of two particular settings, as she's dressed for the frigid climate of her world's polar regions where she was raised among the Water Tribes.

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is spread across four kingdoms, each tied to one of the four primal elements. The Water Tribes, Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, and of course the Air Nomads, define their regions' culture and way of life by adapting to their unique environments. Korra, the eponymous hero of the sequel series, has a couple of different iconic looks for the different regions.

What began with the original animated series in 2005 has since spread to include not just the sequel series, but prequel novels and boundless numbers of comic books, so it's still anybody's guess exactly what kind of book Konietzko is working on for Dark Horse.

Konietzko and series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino were involved until recently with a live-action remake of Avatar being produced by Netflix, but both creators have since departed the project.
