Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: Who Should Voice the Title Role in the Netflix Dub?

Netflix recently acquired the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure spinoff OVA series, Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan, and plans to stream it in Spring 2021. The series stars the titular Kishibe Rohan, a side character from JoJo Part 4, Diamond is Unbreakable. Although no dub has yet been announced, it is not unreasonable to assume that Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan will receive one, as every season of JoJo has so far.

However, there is one problem: in the dub of Diamond is Unbreakable, Rohan was voiced by Vic Mignogna. It goes without saying that if this new series is dubbed, Rohan's voice actor will need to be replaced. Here are a few candidates who might be up to the task.

Benjamin Diskin

It’s admittedly unlikely that Diskin would be chosen for the role, as he has already played Joseph Joestar, the protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part Two, which is also known as Battle Tendency. However, when playing Joseph, Diskin used a British accent, which Rohan would not have.

In addition, his range as a voice actor and Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan’s lack of connections to Part Two would make this dual casting less of a problem. With Joseph, Diskin has already proved he can play the sort of character Rohan is -- arrogant and somewhat comedic, but able to hold his own in serious and unsettling situations.

Liam O'Brien

Gaara, Naruto

O’Brien is capable of bringing the smugness necessary for Rohan’s character, as he demonstrates in roles such as Isaac in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. However, Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan has a more serious and frightening tone than Diamond is Unbreakable, so Rohan’s voice actor should also be able to handle tense and dramatic scenes.

Gaara in Naruto, Nephrite in Sailor Moon (the Viz dub), and many other roles prove that O’Brien has the range for scenes with more realistic emotion. Rohan’s voice should strike a middle ground between these roles and characters like Isaac -- not too deep and serious, but not too over the top, either.

Lucien Dodge

Although not identical, the voice Dodge uses for Zoisite in Sailor Moon has some similarities to Mignona’s Rohan voice as both play up the flamboyant and haughty aspects of their characters’ personalities.

When he plays Felix in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Dodge portrays in his character a similar sort of haughtiness, but with a more serious edge. Dodge is used to playing characters like Rohan -- that is to say, characters who are arrogant and standoffish, and sometimes even a bit flashy, but who are dedicated to what they do and are perfectly capable of delivering real emotion when they need to.

Todd Haberkorn

Despite being a prolific voice actor, Haberkorn has yet to appear in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in a major role, having only voiced background characters in the first two parts. Voicing Rohan would be the perfect chance for him to have a larger role in the series.

Several of his characters have had the same somewhat nasal tone that Mignona brought to Rohan, and with a wide range of roles under his belt -- including such iconic characters as Death the Kid in Soul Eater, Natsu in Fairy Tail and Hikaru in Ouran High School Host Club -- Haberkorn has the experience needed for depicting any of Rohan’s emotional states.
