The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois, Season 2, Episode 12, "Lies That Bind," which aired Tuesday, May 31, on The CW.
In Superman & Lois' second season, the Kents have struggled to cope with the threat of Ally Allston, not just physically but mentally. She almost killed Clark in the Bizarro World, and on top of that, she brainwashed Lois' sister, Lucy, once more -- making it clear she had many ways to hurt the family.
This is why many expected Ally to use dirty tactics to get her cosmic pendant back, so she could merge her world with Earth-Prime and take control. But as Superman & Lois resumed following a short break, Ally took the direct route and came for a brawl. Interestingly, it led to one dangerous relic being destroyed. However, Ally still has hope, as another remains that's still empowering her movement.
The relic that got smashed was, predictably, the pendant. It occurred when Kal-El freed his brother, Tal-Rho, so they could burn the gem in a volcano using their heat vision. Only they could generate enough power, so Tal agreed, hoping to redeem himself after his own takeover plans failed earlier this season.
Ally came through the rift in the Shuster Mines, and a scrap broke out, but thankfully, Steel intervened. This allowed the Kryptonian brothers time to blow the gem up, leaving Ally retreating to try to reassemble the pieces. It was a massive loss, and as much as she's hoping she can fix the pendant, there's no guarantee she will. It's also uncertain if this will affect her stature as a god after both her selves merged.
Conversely, the other relic that exists and will allow Ally to keep mounting an offense is the portal itself. The Stargate-like hole in the cave in Smallville is intact, with Sam Lane and Steel admitting they have no clue how to close it. Steel and Natalie ran experiments before in Superman & Lois, pondering if X-Kryptonite might be able to seal it, but thus far, there's no concrete solution. What made the heroes' job even more difficult is Jon, Jordan and Nat caused a cave-in that segregated the rift.
This made it difficult to access X-Kryptonite, which can be used against Ally's army, especially her Dark Lana/Superwoman. More pertinently, Steel and co. won't be able to get near it to perform experiments. Given the sensitive shifts, the military might not be able to either. To make it worse, Ally unveiled her Parasite powers and drained some of Clark and Tal's energy, so with the House of El weakened, Ally has an advantage. Ultimately, it's a close game on the chessboard, but this portal and Ally's army are tipping the odds in her favor. Even if Parasite loses abilities, Evil Lana's going to be a major asset, and with the X-K in limited amounts, she could pave the way for Ally's victory with just three episodes left in Superman & Lois Season 2.
Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
