The worlds of Spider-Man 2099 and Batman Beyond have just crashed into each other in menacing new fan art.
On June 2, comic book artist and writer Colin Craker tweeted a piece of stunning fan art bringing together two of comics' most thrilling, futuristic heroes. The artwork sees Batman Terry McGinnis standing solemnly in the rain alongside a crouched Miguel O'Hara, both of whom are decked out in their respective gear.
Miguel O'Hara, better known as Spider-Man in the future he hails from, first appeared in the pages of 1992's Amazing Spider-Man #365 before starring in writer Peter David and artist Rick Leonardi's Spider-Man 2099 series that kicked off later that year. As his era's Spider-Man, Miguel has made it his life's mission to disrupt the maniacal manipulations of Alchemax, which has developed a stranglehold on the city. Miguel has recently taken center stage once again in writer Steve Orlando Spider-Man 2099: Exodus title illustrated by various artists, which sees the titular hero taking on a whole new breed of Green Goblin.
Meanwhile, Terry McGinnis, created by the legendary Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, was introduced in the pilot episode of 1999's Batman Beyond animated series, which is considered by many to have pioneered the space for similar shows in the years that followed. The series was crafted as a continuation of the universe first established in 1992's Batman: The Animated Series. Terry met the retired Bruce Wayne after running onto the grounds of Wayne Manor in an attempt to escape the Jokerz gang, and the two would later work together following the death of Terry's father, Warren, with Terry serving as the Dark Knight in the show. Eventually in Justice League Unlimited, it was revealed that Terry is actually Bruce's biological son, a result of Amanda Waller and Project Cadmus recoding Warren's DNA, so there would be a Batman after Bruce's retirement or death.
While Miguel has appeared in television shows like the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series, the character's turn on the small screen has not been as lengthy as Batman Beyond, though Miguel does feature in a few video games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010) and Spider-Man: Edge of Time (2011). The wall crawler is about to make the leap to the big screen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), following his appearance voiced by actor Oscar Issac in the end credits for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
As for McGinnis, as of writing, he is starring in Batman Beyond: Neo-Year, a comic title by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing and artist Max Dunbar. McGinnis also recently appeared in Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes #3 by acclaimed author Brian Michael Bendis and artist Scott Godlewski.
