Stranger Things Season 4 Destroys Bridgerton’s Premiere Viewing Record

Stranger Things Season 4 has toppled Bridgerton Season 2's record for the biggest premiere weekend for an English-language series on Netflix -- in pretty convincing fashion, no less.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fourth season of Stranger Things accumulated 286.79 million viewership hours worldwide during its first weekend in release. By contrast, Bridgerton Season 2 -- the previous record holder for Netflix's most-watched premiere -- racked up 193 million viewership hours during its own debut weekend back in March. In other words, Stranger Things broke the record by a staggering 93 million hours.

Currently, Bridgerton Season 2 still holds the record for Netflix's most-watched English-language series of all time, having accumulated 656.26 million viewership hours worldwide during its first 28 days in release. Meanwhile, the Korean drama Squid Game decisively remains Netflix's most-watched series of any language, having racked up an astonishing 1.65 billion viewership hours during its first 28 days on the platform.

However, Stranger Things Season 4 may be hot on Bridgerton's tail in that respect as well, having reached nearly 44 percent Bridgerton Season 2's 28-day total after just three days. On top of that, the second volume Stranger Things Season 4 is still waiting in the wings, and is due to hit Netflix to kick off the month of July.

Furthermore, the success of Stranger Things' latest season can be seen outside of Netflix itself. Season 4 prominently features singer-songwriter Kate Bush's hit 1985 single "Running Up That Hill." As a result, the song has surged to No. 1 on iTunes and No. 2 on Spotify in the United States.

Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 premiered on Netflix on May 27. Following Volume 2, the hit supernatural drama is set to return for a fifth and final season. A potential spinoff is also being developed. In the meantime, an official synopsis for Season 4 can be read below:

It's been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time -- and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier.

Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 is streaming on Netflix now. Volume 2 premieres on July 1.
