Black Adam leading man Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shared an intimidating behind-the-scenes photo of himself as the forthcoming DC Extended Universe movie's eponymous antihero.
Shared on Johnson's personal Instagram account, the photo sees Johnson garbed in Black Adam's costume with a look of anger on his face. "Intense week of shooting Black Adam," Johnson stated in the description. "We are redefining the superhero paradigm. The antihero. The people no longer need a hero. They need a protector. Rage against the dying of the light. The hierarchy in the DC Universe will change." Prior to this, Johnson shared a similar photo of himself in the costume, where he stated that while he has had "the privilege of playing some great (fun) characters over the years," none of his previous roles spoke "to [his] DNA" more than Black Adam.

Regarding his role as Black Adam, Johnson jokingly said earlier this year that he began training for the role since he "came out of the womb" and that he believes he was born to play the character. "But in all honesty, this project has been with me for 10 ten years now," Johnson continued. "The process began when we started to stand the material up and really developed it into what it is present day. Once the start date was agreed on by our Seven Bucks production company, the rest of my team, Warner Bros. Studio, and DC Comics, I started to build an exhaustive training program with my coach Dave Rienzi. I wanted to come into this in the best shape of my career."
Tying into Johnson's comment about the movie being worked on for over a decade, producer Hiram Garcia delved into why it took that long for Black Adam to finally become a reality. "It's like some things come fast, some things don't, but it's our job in this business to make sure we continue to keep all of them developing, and they'll hatch when they're ready," he noted. "When they're ready, that's when we give it to the world and go."
Additionally, director Jaume Collet-Serra proclaimed that the film will disrupt the superhero movie genre, much like how the titular character is "a disruptor in the DC Comics world." As for the future of Black Adam in the DCEU, Garcia commented that the project will be the start of a multi-film arc for the antihero and that there are plans to give spinoffs to characters introduced in it.
Black Adam opens in theaters on Oct. 21.
