Tech-house has overtaken techno as the most popular genre of electronic music, according to a newly-published business report as part of the International Music Summit in Ibiza. The recent report states that sales of tech-house music overtook techno on online music store Beatport in 2021.
After holding second place for the past two years, techno has officially moved down to second place, while tech-house has climbed one space up the rankings. House music remains in the third spot. According to the same report, which covers everything from music sales and shares to demand and challenges in the music industry, amapiano saw a rise this past year, “exploding globally” in 2021.
The business report revealed that despite its growth, only a few amapiano tracks of 80 added to an official Spotify playlist were signed to major labels. The genre is popular all over the world, with high search rates in the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. The IMS report shows that there has been a lot of growth in the number of electronic music festivals and clubs, increasing by 166% in 2021. This is totaling $1.6 billion.
The industry is buzzing. I heard tons of excitement in my interviews with artists, promoters, agents and labels in the last month. Partly because, as predicted last year, electronic music is back once again,” said the report’s author, David Boyle.
“Led by market share gains in the UK and Germany, we found growth in 16 countries as the joy and energy of electronic music soundtracks the world’s post-pandemic recovery.”
