Season 4 of Stranger Things will spend more time in the Upside Down than any previous season.
In a recent interview with IGN, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that, while the previous season never showed audiences any of the Upside Down, Season 4 would change all of that. "We didn’t get to go into the Upside Down in last season at all due to the narrative," Ross said. "And this season, we wanted to really go in there and spend some time there. So that’s something we’re super excited about this season. I mean, we spend more time in the Upside Down than any other season. It’s not even close."
This information follows the recent release of the trailer for Stranger Things Season 4, which gave audiences a lot of new details to pick apart. The new season finds the characters spread out around the world, with the Byers family recently relocated to California, Hopper being held captive in Russia, and the rest of the characters remaining in Hawkins to deal with the aftermath of the Battle of Starcourt.
The series creators recently likened the new season to Game of Thrones, given its increased scope. "We kind of jokingly call it our Game of Thrones season because it’s so spread out, so I think that’s what’s unique or most unique about the season," Matt explained. "Joyce and the Byers family have left at the end of Season 3. They are in California – we’ve always wanted to have that like E.T.-esque suburb aesthetic, which we finally got to do this year in the desert; and then we have Hopper in Russia; and then of course we have a group remaining in Hawkins. So we have these three storylines, are all connected and kind of interwoven together, but it’s just very different tones."
The trailer also seemingly debuted the Upside Down's latest villain, a corpse-like creature whose defeat may end the threat of the other dimension forever. Little is known about the monster, and it's unclear if it's the owner of the sinister voice heard throughout the new trailer. The footage also gives the impression that fan-favorite character Max will be gaining new powers, meaning Eleven would no longer be the only super-powered member of the gang.
The Upside Down will force its way into Netflix when Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 debuts on May 27.
