Netflix and animation studio David Production released a new trailer for their upcoming reboot of the action-adventure series, Spriggan.
The all-new trailer provides fans with an exclusive look into the original net animation (ONA) anime series by bringing many iconic scenes from the Spriggan manga to life. The trailer opens with main character Yu Ominae declaring that he and his fellow agents will protect the advanced technology left behind by the ancient civilization that once ruled Earth from those who want to misuse it, as this is the job of the "Spriggan." Other primary characters from the series are also showcased, such as Jean Jacquemonde, a French Spriggan operator who teams up with Yu to battle their foes, and Colonel MacDougall, a genetically-enhanced boy with dangerous psionic abilities.
Hiroshi Takashige's Spriggan is a Japanese manga series that was serialized in Shogakukan's shonen manga magazines Weekly Shonen Sunday and Shonen Sunday Zokan between 1989 and 1996. Set in the final years of the Cold War, mystical artifacts known as "out-of-place artifacts" or OOPArt left behind by an ancient society are uncovered across the globe. Fearing that various dark forces will want to exploit the mysterious powers of these relics for their own gain, the ARCAM Corporation forms a division of elite secret agents known as "Spriggans" to prevent the artifacts from being used as weapons of mass destruction.
Yu Ominae is one such Spriggan operative and he is called into action one day when ARCAM receives word that the U.S. Machine Corps, a rogue organization of the Pentagon, is making moves to steal the recently discovered Noah's Ark in order to take over the world. Teaming up with fellow Spriggan Jean Jacquemonde, it is a race against time as Yu goes up against Colonel MacDougall, the leader of the U.S. Machine Corps, and the deadly psionic powers he possesses due to his extensive genetic enhancements.
The upcoming Spriggan ONA will be a reboot of Studio 4°C's anime film, which adapted the manga in 1998. Hiroshi Kobayashi (Kiznaiver) is directing the series, along with Attack on Titan's Hiroshi Seko, who is in charge of the series' composition, and Shuhei Handa (Little Witch Academia), who serves as the show's character designer. The Japanese voice cast will feature the talents of Chiaki Kobayashi (Sk8: The Infinity) as Yu Ominae, Youhei Azakami (The Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath of the Gods) as Jean Jacquemonde, Ayumu Murasae of Haikyuu!! fame as Colonel MacDougall, Platinum End's Kenji Hamada as Director Yamamato and Mariya Ise (The Promised Neverland) as Yoshino Somei.
Spriggan will be available to stream on Netflix on June 18.
